Title: Sugar Maple Brochure
Post by: MGebhart on January 07, 2010, 01:46:50 PM
Hi,

I'm running a little behind with the release of the Sugar Maple Seasons Pack. I am adding more objects and images to give you a more robust product.

I put together a quick brochure to provide you with information on the release.

Please note this is not the final word on what will be available.

Hi Marc,

Great to see you're modelling for the CS!
I have one of your first pine-models in the back of my mind, which need quite some adjustments to show properly in TG2 (increasing diffuse colors, translucency, specularity), will you test these first in TG2 so we can use them straight away?
Looking forward to see your final product, these look like some nice trees :)

Cheers,
Martin

Wow, the pack is absolutly amazing. To be honest, at first I thought I could spare the time downloading and reading the brochure, as you have posted the front page here, but I am glad I downloaded the brochure in the end!

There's much more in the pack, as the brochure reveals, than appears on the surface. No wonder took you a little longer than you expected ;)

So for anyone reading this thread: check out the brochure.

Cheers,
Frank

The brochure is well done. Some people may have difficulty with the painted shader. But the image is very straight forward to anyone who has used it, even occasionally.

I just put it together today as a stop-gap until I get a more polished one out tomorrow.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Martin,

Good call. The Pines were my first outing using Xfrog so, my knowledge was limited.

The image sample below is an example of  how the High Resolution Sugar Maple will render out-of-the-box.

There are images which can be used for various purposes. They include the base image (defused), normal image (which seems to work better than the displacement image) and specular image. The user can manipulate these as they feel necessary. Perhaps one day Terragen 2 will have a surface scatter shader function in the future.

The inset image is an example of using small displacement and translucence on the leaves. I opted not to use the specular image map however, users may want to experiment to achieve their own results. If you compare the leaves in the inset image with the full tree image you can see a more natural look. Using a small amount of translucence eliminates the strong contrast between light and dark transitions.

I hope this addresses your questions.

Here is one comparison showing the difference in the high resolution vs basic Sugar Maple.

In the side-by-side you see how Translucency makes a great difference when rendering the tree. This is evident when light is coming from behind an object. This gives the trees a more realistic look.

The image on the left is the high resolution Sugar Maple.

Thank you everyone.

I'm going to do a final test today (it's 5:00am here) and get the Sugar Maple posted today.

I have about 10 more hours on the render I am doing, maybe less. The tree does look fantastic.
