I have always said that modern man has under estimated the intellectual prowess of our ancient ancestors. This is a great example of this. I first heard of this in a book 'Men, Ships, and the Sea'. I knew that it was important, but I had no idea it was this sophisticated. I had thought of it as more of a moon phase, tide table devise.
