This is a winter variant of the soon to be released Birch Pack.

Yeah.. I really like those trees, but are the branches supposed to have a different color like that?

These are totally awesome. I would guess you found the bark textures you were looking for.

Henry,

Yes. I have a neighbor who has a few in his backyard. I'm not sure how I missed that.

Do you know which species of birch this is? The coloured branches aren't familiar from the typical Silver Birch of Europe, so I'm guessing this is native to North America?

They look like the North American variant, Almost all of Marc's trees have been North American as far as I can tell.

yeah the light brown branch texture cannot be right.

Other than that it's really cool, and the scene looks convincing as well.

domdib,

Paper Birch. However, this branch color is not typical for all Birches. I think in the final release I will eliminate this.

oh, I stand corrected.

BUt good to hear you'll use the other texture anyway :)

Cheers,

The branch color is right. The lighter coloring does not start until the branch starts to get mature, There are a couple across the street from me. Next to oaks and chestnuts, these are my favorite trees.

Henry,

Yes, North America. It would be cool if some of you folks suggest other trees, perhaps native to your part of the world.

wow Marc, these look great, though the branch variation looks like a mutant, or a graft from another species, like copper beech!

this would be cool, as a hero tree: http://www.sagen.at/fotos/data/506/Linde1.jpg

A linden tree, and a big old beast, such as in the photo :)

If you're looking for a challenge... well, the Redwood is the obvious one. But goodness knows how hard it would be to model one of the really big ones.

domdib,

I was messing around with this. This is why it's free. I'll get to a detailed one soon.

Too me the new tree branches look wrong. But thanks for the update.

They are working well with your BigPines for a North Woods render.

I notice that a lot of birches are partially overgrown by algy, which would offset the pure whiteness of the bark. And would make the green branches look good again. Although in our 'rough birch' the smaller branches are a shiny sort of dark gray/green, not as bright as in your initial object. To get this algy, you can always put an extra (one color greenish) PF in the part shader.

Yes - I prefer the 2nd lad.  Nice tree - fair play to you.  I have xfrog 3.5 and I've been meaning for aaaages to do gorse bushes - they could feature heavily in some contry scenes.
