Title: how are people doing strata these days?
Post by: Jack on February 18, 2010, 03:22:51 AM
hey was just wondering how are people achieving strata these days still with the strata outcrop shader or are people using that file efflux posted with those complex functions?

in my latest image(massif v2) I have strata like structures, but did not use strata and outcrops shader...I think it maybe caused by the large scale voronoi merged using a power fractal as a mix controller, though I could be wrong?
:)

I use it. To limit the area it effects I use a surface layer and fractal breakup. Before I add it, I use my power fractals for color and displacement. Then I measure to get the size of the strata and the hard layer spacing.

I've had some luck using a painted shader to position the Strata shader in the terrain tab. I generate/load a terron and paint the area I want the Strata to appear and rhen still in the Terrain Tab I go: Add terrain>Displacement shader>Strata and outcrops shader and then adjust the parameters of the shader till it looks either cool or like what I want.. ...

I like using the strata outcrop shader and a power fractal with its noise tweaked by 0.2 or 0.1 in y direction.
with an additional constant blend-shader for the strata shader, you can get smooth and also very hard results.
