Title: Stones Issue
Post by: CCC on February 26, 2010, 10:15:13 PM
Is there any reason why i can not get an even balance of displacements along the entirety of my stones? Stone tallness and pancake effect are both 0.5.

Check the size of the displacement. Make sure your scales are reasonable for the size of the rocks. Other than these, everything seems good.

Even at very small sizes this is still an issue.

Try checking "Only displace upwards" in the "Shape" section of the stones' node.
Actually I don't know how deeply it works, but it seems to be helpful for what you need.

I think that raising 'pancake effect' would really help you here. You'll want some of the stones to bulge outwards from their bottom so they appear to be sitting on the ground, and a little under it, this will remove most of the sharp edges from the outside of the stones. Try pancake values of 1 to 2. You could raise 'tallness' to about 0.75, too, to accentuate their shape.

Your displacement's 'smallest scale' appear to be a little too small for the amount of displacement you've applied, too. Try raising 'smallest scale' or, lowering displacement by about half, keeping the scales the same..

Hopefully that's of some help. :)

I create a surface layer for my fake stones. Then I add a power fractal for the color input. When I get the color sized correctly, I link the power fractal to the displacement input. For some reason this way does not cause he 'exploding' displacement difficulty.

Groovy, thank you all.    :)
