Title: Beached
Post by: dandelO on February 27, 2010, 07:30:35 AM
This is a highly modified scene built from my TG2 Voronoi Caustics Example.tgd, found in the first volume of my Public Library.

I spent quite some time making the sand blend properly with the stones, which are also a modified version of my 8 Layers of Fake Stones(0.01 - 1m). I'm still not entirely happy with the mix and I think there could be more stones below the waterline. I might reiterate this at some point, it was only a 1h 30m render without soft shadows, 2h 30m with them enabled.
Maybe when I'm bored enough I'll redo it.

The canoe is Tom's(Sonshine777), who was a great inspiration to me when I first started out with TG2, his renders would always blow me away! He doesn't post much nowadays but is still an active member, I occasionally see him in here. So, thanks, Tom! :)
You can find Tom's '2 Canoes' at TG.org.

Fish is a free rainbow trout model, found here... http://toucan.web.infoseek.co.jp/3DCG/3ds/FishModelsE.html

Grass is just TG2 grass clumps.

My SandelO Shader is a work in progress that I'll eventually post, once I'm happy enough with it to be easily dropped into most scenes with minimum fuss.

Best viewed full size and, as ever, thanks for looking! :)

I like this scene. The fish might be improved, there's something not quite right. The canoe is awesome, Old Town isn't it?

The only thing I would change is to have the shore more gravelly. But this is your place for canoeing. Very nice render. I hope you continue with this.

Thanks, Henry. :)

The canoe is indeed awsome. You know, they're actually replicas of a real canoe that he made. The resemblance is striking to the real one... http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=2155.0
That's the thread he made when it was completed. There was a fantastic start-to-finish reel of images. The work that went into it was great. His Photobucket account seems to be inactive now, I can't see any images. However, if you are a member, you can see some pics in this thread from another site... http://www.terranuts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9445&highlight=canoe

One of the 3D models is a near perfect replica of the real thing. The other has different wood binding and such, they're both very nice models, though.

It has a pure(?) nice warm feeling. I like it.

One question , DandelO; the action in the image seems like from the above right to the lower left , across . The Fish , boat , shadows.
Was this deliberately ? Did you try to change the shadow angle? Not that there is a need for this  :)
Only to see how it would change the feeling of the image ?

Kadri.

I know, Kadri, everything seems kind of pointing away from the left and towards the top right end, and the sun coming from the top right accentuates that, too, with the shadow direction.

I have another one cooking now(got bored, some attention span, eh? ;)), the fish has moved, shrunk a bit and multiplied.
There's also another 6 populations in it now, too, hopefully I haven't overdone those, they're just meant to give a little extra depth to the scene. I'll post when it's done, the last one took around 2h 30m, I expect this one to be almost double since I've upped the GI settings, AA settings, and increased soft shadow samples. Maybe later tonight.
Although, I'm actually being sociable tonight! Guests in while the render goes in the background. I'll post if I'm in a safe condition to drive a computer later. ;)

Cheers, man! :)

Scratch that. I'd say three times as long, at least, quadrupled, probably. I really think I've overdone the tweaking of quality settings this time, I'm not sure it's going to add that much to the overall image quality.

Oh well, past the point of no return now, I'll just have to wait... :D

Well, after a more than 4 times long render due to GI, AA and soft shadow samples, I was right. It doesn't have that much overall quality over the original.
Soft shadows are far smoother and the GI is better when you compare them by flicking between the two but 10h 33m from 2h 30, hmmm.

The incoming waves are less noticeable, too, because of the darker subsurface. The floating junk and beached junk are 6x Cypher's pine needles(tell me if you spot any pine trees in the area, I can see none! :D) and there are more fish.

I'll leave this one now, I think.

Thanks for re-looking! :)

Well the fish look nicer. I like the pine needles, they are a nice touch. I think the canoe looks a little better with the soft shadows and the GI. It's a cool pic!

"Where have all the pine trees gone?" ;)
The shadow in the boat is really nice with soft shadows. Like it! :)
