I notice 3 buttons at the bottom of the terrain window that seem to infer that I can orbit my camera around a point on the landscape, and this is just what I want to do, but can't figure out how to use them. Has anyone any info on these buttons? I know I can do an orbit manually but if there is an easier way I would like to use it.

This orbiting is for camera navigation rather than animation, if that's what you're thinking of. Go to the Mouse and Key Settings dialog available from the Help menu to see how to orbit. It's in the 3D Preview section.
