Title: Walli's NWDA Dry Grass
Post by: FrankB on March 19, 2010, 04:13:03 PM
showcased here, but carefully mixed in with Walli's other Fresh Grasses 1 - 3 in various variants, Crocus, Astilbe and Mouse Ear, Lilac and Dry Bush.
I think it must be around 15 populations here.

Oh, and a single Walli dandelion poking its head out in the lower right ;)

Cheers,
Frank

Nice render Frank  :)

There is a interesting part -tree in the image. In the upper left part. The tree looks like it has a white kind of halo ?

Quotethat one blossoming japanese tree

I would cut it down, Frank, it looks just like the luminosity is set far too high. Or put it somewhere downhill, not set against the sky. Apart from that it's a very realistic scene, I really like it!

Thanks guys :-)

I forgot to mention this is an older scene I have posted here previously. I am just re-using this scene because I wanted to try to mix the dry grasses with the fresh ones, and I remembered I had a suitable scene set up already.

Old or new, it's still bloody fantastic, Frank!

I love the foreground where you can see the earth through the grasses, very nice! :)

Yes very nice although I must admit I don't like the glowing tree either.

Is the DOF terragen?

I hope they manage to iron out the problems with the DOF for the next release so the rest of us can use it. I like how it works in this image.

very, very nice and I second that, DOF adds a lot to such scenes!

About the cherry - typical problem that can arise with with bright blossoms, often you have to reduce brightness of the texture to grey.

I don't deem it problematic at all. If this was a photograph, the white petals would probably be overexposed, too, as they stand against the sun.
Actually and honestly, I find this cherry an eye catching element of the scene ;)

Very nice scene Frank, shows the grasses nicely :)
The DOF really adds to the realism.
I tend to agree with the others about the blossom tree, one could call it an eye catcher since it draws the attention, others could call that distracting.

Excuse me Frank but i don't think that it looks natural. If you can find a photo that looks alike that is another thing of course  :)

I have seen this effect before in photos. It's called glare. Unless you are filming a new Star Trek movie, it's not desirable. For CG, it's considered a good thing.

well, the point is that if your photo would look like this, then I would say - work on your exposure ;-)
Kidding aside - yes, when lit from behind, then you could get some sort of glowing - the point is, on a photograph this object still would fit in place, would look like it belongs there. In case of your rendering it looks like the cherry has a different lighting. It simply looks out of place in my eyes. It almost looks like a 2D billboard, no sense of depth.
If you manage to keep the glow AND make it look like it belongs there, then you made it. Until then I would say - great rendering, but the cherry looks wrong.
Thats the reason why I said that its often hard to work with white blossoms.

Probably some sort of AO pass on the cherry would help to bring back the depth.

Good point Walli. I have known that you have a better eye for details than I do. To be honest, my eyesight is so bad I can't drive a car.

my eye sight is actually also not that good ;-)

Probably another point comes into play - the cherry from this perspective has a similar shape compared to the bushes in front of it. To me it almost looks like a "ghost version" of the shrubs in front of it, ready to fly around in the sky.

I am not claiming that this cherry is totally wrong, but I simply have some sort of earie/ghost like feeling when seeing this cherry.
