I can see the change too. The picture looks much better now...
It's way too dark for my screen to make out much detail. Guessing you're using a TFT screen. Those tend to be setup too bright.
What's a TFT screen?

yeah, its way too dark for my screen also. I can barely see the textures you are all talking about. But if a take the brightness way up i can see something and it looks pretty nice

I let my screen decide its brightness itself. Unfortunately, automatic brightness features are optimised for screens in shop windows, so, yes, TFT screens do tend to be set up too bright...
I have a 17" widescreen LCD monitor (it's a Dell Inspiron 9300) with their TrueBrite screen, it's very nice
