Title: Detail test
Post by: old_blaggard on April 20, 2010, 01:40:12 PM
I've had some time lately, so I've started in on a little exercise on close-up detail, something that I have always struggled with. I'm looking for comments and critiques so I can make this better!

Looks great! The only way to make it better is with more variation.  You already have great plant variation, but to make it really "real" I think you need quite a few more models especially bits and pieces of broken and/or dead stuff, the odd twig here and there that sort of thing.

I think the 'mud' is sufficiently flat to allow for a little wetness in the lowest areas. Otherwise a little more sand/pebbles/dirt would enhance it, I'd say. And some twigs indeed. But it looks very realistic as it is.

I have very little to add - the lighting is sublime. Perhaps the near foreground is allowing too much of the grey surface underneath to show in slightly too spotty a way, but this is a tiny quibble. I'd say your previous struggles have borne fruit!

You can work on it so much you will there is no limit(in any image) , but it is very good as it is , in my opinion  :)

Thanks guys. I'll definitely be adding some more gunk and dead stuff to the scene. I'll also look into what I can do with the dirt - Dune's got a good idea, and some people over at TG.org gave me a couple of things to think about as well.

My first thought as well.  Looks good so far.  Add a bit of wet mud and some twigs and dead leaves and the junk that collects around the base of those plants and you're on your way.

I echo the above O_B...looking really nice, what plants are you using?...i must try this myself, gonna search for some small detritus etc!
:)

Making progress. I need more variety in the detritus, but that'll happen. Also added some damper, lower spaces. Any other comments?

I like the fake stones better. Do you have Walli's Dry Grass pack? There are a couple of models which would fit nicely here. Maybe one of Marc's logs would look good here also.

it's fantastic. The main thing to make this better is to use better grass models. This is so up close, that you need model that have some dead, brownish blades at the bottom of the clumps, and sticking out here and there.
Also I think the blades are not filligree enough, to look real.

But don't get me wrong, I mean it looks great already.

njeneb - Nope, don't have the grass pack unfortunately.

Frank - I agree with you generally. I don't think the grass blades need to be broken up that much, though - after all, grass does tend to grow straight ;). Unfortunately, most of these models are .tgo files, so I don't think I can do much editing with what I have.

Yes, you can. Just add a power fractal under the output of one leaf (or all), use one color, tiny-very small scales and you'll have a color breakup of the leaves (brown spots/patches or whatever)... or add a power fractal to the color input of the default shader, or both...

Thanks guys.

Dune - yes, I am going to be doing that. But I also wanted to break up some of the blades in some of my models, have them be bent over a bit more in some cases, and for that I would need to be able to edit the geometry.

I really like this one! Your light is wonderful!
