Some postwork added. I'm not that much of a purist, so I really like to see what can be done to make it look better.
For the purists: here's the original output (smaller of course).

not much, that's for sure. It's amazing as it is now. Great render Hannes!
This is really fantastic!
Great render Hannes! Nothing much to add :)
But if you want that we say something there comes one thing to my mind now.
But this isn't your fault if there is what i want to say in your image.
İn some models the leafs are like a simple plane ; in other models the leafs are a little more detailed and twisted .
The simple ones look from the side view like a line .The detailed ones look more realistic of course .
I think you have more of the simple leaf objects in your image ?
How much your image would change with other objects i don't know , but would like to see :)
Nice render anyway !
This problem with good objects(or lack of) especially in close range is coming more and more in the foreground lately.
Especially with good artist like you and others here . Modelers have to go one step further from now on in my opinion .
Thanks for your comments!
Kadri, you're definitely right. There's the big tree in the right upper part of the image which is the one I used for this image:
http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=8182.0
As I wrote I used a particle system to create the foliage. Shame on me - I used instanced texture mapped simple planes. It would have been better to use a little bit bent planes to make it look more natural. Next time!
For the lying tree in the foreground I used parts of the same model (only of the trunk and some branches) and let ivy generator do some magic. The ivy leaves are a bit flat too, but I'm not sure I could change this?!
Btw I also used ivy generator to create these hanging things (?). I grew some ivy around a displaced cylinder, deleted the cylinder and the leaves afterwards and had some nice ...err... hanging things. I again used a particle system to place them onto the tree the correct way.
Here's my compliment to the makers of TG:
When I created this model it took ages in Max even to change some simple settings. I'm not talking about rendering.
Exporting as an obj-file took also some time. I had to adjust all the textures after importing it into TG, but once it was loaded and saved as tgo-file even creating a population with this very dense model was a piece of cake for TG.
Fantastic!!
Dear planetside staff, now that this is really easy, you can focus on object placement in TG ;D
(if there would at least be a "sit on terrain" function for single objects, you could make the pain in my butt go away!!)
Je suis sur le cul, c'est jolie surtout la première image ;D
Thanks for the explanation Hannes :)
This is fantastic work. Realistic but also very moody! I like it!
I was looking for dryads hanging out in the foliage. I really like the light in the post work image. The pure render looks very neat also. Nice work!
Simply beautiful, no crits!
Oh all right then but I'm really digging for this, a little more bump/displacement on the bark and leaves ;D
Richard
Really nice early morning misty atmosphere here. I love it. Post work is fine by me.
Very atmospheric.
great mood in this picture!
...playing around with stereo imaging (I'm avatarized!)
Here's the image for the crosseyed viewers (are there any?)
...and here's an animated gif (makes a little bit nervous, I know...)
Wow ! Nice. The stereo ones showed me that i didn't quite get what was in the 2D image before.
It is not easy on the eyes but , to have depth is good . Thanks :D
Edit : Did you use any other program for this , Hannes?
Hi Kadri,
yes, it's not that easy to get used to the crosseyed viewing, but after some practising it works quite nicely.
I used only this small program here:
http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/index.html
to create the animated gif.
For the crosseyed view image I only used photoshop to put the two images next to each other.
Btw I'm really a fan of this crosseyed image stuff. My wife calls me Clarence for quite some time now ;D
Daktari ;D
Hannes , you brought back many memories . I used to live from 1967 to 1975 in Deutschland .
We are nearly equal in age ; Daktari , Flipper , Skippy , Time tunnel , Ufo , Avengers , Tarzan , Lassie and what not ...!
But one thing that i can not stand now are films and series (not in reality of course) with child's and animals .
I think i have seen too much of them :D
...those were the days!! ;D
;D
Beautiful render! The post work really does bring out a lot in the final result. As you say, some may not see this as "pure", but in reality 99% of the great CG work you see out there relies heavily on good post work, especially color grading, tone mapping, etc.

great work Hannes!
Hannes,
The gif flipping is cool. I can't get any results crossing my eyes other than vertigo.
A small animation just moving the camera forward and a small degree of rotation would be outstanding. I'm sure that would tie-up your computer for sometime.
Thank you all!!
Marc, I know it takes some time to learn this crosseyed viewing, but when you got it, it's really great. I think there are some good instructions around.
Unfortunately I don't have the animation module (yet), so my computer had a lucky escape!

Technically your gif is an animation Hannes :D
You can make it a little longer with a couple of frames more ...no "lucky escape!" ;)
The 3D is pretty awesome.. even better than the original image. Well done. :)
Here's a 3d update. I rendered another one with "the eyes" less far apart. I thought the effect was a little bit too extreme. It's not that much of a difference, but i like it more.
...and the animated gif:
Beautiful work! Wonderful light!
Impressive, I like.
Shake it baby! ;D
AAHHGGG.. my LCD display is being shaken violently ;D ;D ;D

Superb....how did you make the hanging vines? My only crit....you make the rest of us look like amatures....you should be ashamed of yourself. :)
Thank you!
@Markal, in the sixth posting of this thread I wrote how I made these "hanging things". Since it's not (yet) possible to create populations onto objects I had to place the vines before I exported the model as obj-file.
Thanks for the compliment, but I think no one looks like an amateur here. Even beginners deliver beautiful work since there's a lot of information available (though sometimes tricky to find the ones you're looking for).
OK, just for you I'm a little bit ashamed:
:-[
Enough? ;D
