Title: Dissolution
Post by: choronr on April 27, 2010, 02:31:43 AM
Depicted here is dissolution; a dissolving of rock over the eons of time by wind and rain.

Heavy winter rain usually delivers dense amounts of vegetative growth in the spring here in the Sonora desert. Then later in the year, during July and August when our heat reaches  maximum temperatures, the vegetation becomes dry tender for the flash fires we have here caused by the late summer storms. Lightning along with the high winds will ignite the dried vegetation burning much of the growth.  Afterwards, smoke will settle in the low canyons like clouds as you see here in the image.

Much of the progress I've accomplished here and in other of my previous renders are attributed to those helpful guys: Ryan Archer, Frank Basinski, Seth, Martin Huisman, Walli, dandelO, Hetzen; and many others. And, thank goodness for Terragen 2 and the Planetside Forum.

I've placed the .tgd file for this image in the Image Sharing section if you are interested in working with it. Note: The low elevation part of the file is incomplete and could be completed with a little more work. My interest here for this image was concentrating on the higher elevation rock forms.

Wow, superb rock formations, and nicely blended vegetation. I find everything in this highly realistic *except* for the low mist, which looks very flat and 2 dimensional.

Thanks Oshyan. Yes, the smoke is flat; not much in the way of a billowy effect; but, the smoke usually appears this way when is little or no wind. Thanks for your visit and encouragement.

This looks really really realistic.
I agree with the mist, but if it looks like that in the real world (is there really a real world? :)) ...
Maybe the POV could be improved so that you can see a little bit more of the area around?!

Keep up the great work :)

Great work here. I have seen smoke lay flat like this from brush fires. It does settle in the low areas and just lay there. Thanks for sharing the file. Hopefully I will learn something from it. (I'm still in the brain dead zombie state. It's quite annoying and beginning to worry me)

Great work here Bob,  The rock and cliff areas are really nice.  I don't personally care for the mist either, but I've never been to the desert so you would know better than me how it should look  ;)
