I haven't posted anything in ages >:( so here goes... I was having a play with the crater shader thingy as I've never mucked around with this before. I know the rim is too pronounced at the front. I thought that the smoke came out alright though. I may have a go at adding a glowing something in the bottom of the crater... then again, maybe I wont ;D

Yes, the smoke is very sulphurous. A glowing thing at the bottom does sound like an idea. The surfacing is good.
Add some more displacement to the rim perhaps?
At the Moment I have no sense of scale, to my eyes it looks like a rather small crater that one could cover with his foot, how was it supposed to turn out? The smoke indeed looks natural :)

my thoughts exactly, stinky!!!! :D :D
Hi all. Ta for the comments. MacGyver, I agree, but I'm not too sure what too add to help with the scale. In all fairness to me, this was more a mess about with the crater shader, cause I hadn't used it before... that's my excuse, & I'm sticking to it ;D
Anyway, here is a new version, in the dark with some lava at the bottom. It didn't have as much effect on the smoke as I thought so I may do some more to this...

looks good Miles, what about some little guys in protective suits? (like this: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-model-man-protective-suit/323603 (http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-model-man-protective-suit/323603) but cheaper!!!)
A couple of Marc Gebhart's dead pines would help with the scale also.
Now that looks really good. Very realistic lava.
Great work on the molton rock shader. HOT!
Nice lava shader. Totally pwns mine. ;D
wonderful hole... cool lava
Looks bigger already, great lava! No offence ;)
Beautiful work, that remind me a contest at Christianfly.com made with Terragen 1,without postwork, only terragen1:
