Eventually, we'll be able to render some complex objects in TG2 and I thought I would begin a thread for anyone interested in 3D spaceship modeling. I haven't created anything yet on my own, but here's a site for downloading 3D meshes with textures on some of the models. Can't use them commercially, though, if I understand correctly - http://www.trekmeshes.ch/
A great place to find dimensions for spaceships, if you want to do some 3D modeling is - http://www.merzo.net/
I've long been interested in recreating scenes from my favorite Scifi shows such as Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1. Unfortunately, I haven't had any time at all to learn how to model myself. I'm always on the lookout for new meshes, though; thanks for the link :).
I like http://www.scifi-meshes.com/ (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/) there are a few being shared some are quite complex though
its a shame that Ed Gidding's Atlantis doesn't have textures on the download as its arguable the best one and would make a awesome part of a render:D....
I didn't think that Ed shared his models anyways....
i found it. its by Chris Diston if only i could find textures for it:(
(http://www.thescifiworld.net/img/wallpapers/stargate/diston/diston_02_1024x768.jpg)
...Now THAT would be an awesome 3d model to put in terragen. Sw-eet.
Well, if you have 3d max, you could go to turbosquid, they MAY have some starships for free, however I know lots of awesome military vehicles that are there xD
THe only thing is-they're in max. So we need a guy with 3d max to export to Obj or 3ds. :P
i have this atlantis in obj format, but terragen crashes when opening and if its saved as tgo its all black when rendering:(
I have Max, won't have time to do any conversions until April, but I'd be happy to do a few then. I'm taking the compositing track for the time being, although it's tricky without being able to easily transfer camera animation.

Oh awesome :P Look forward to next month then :P lol
discoball what 3dmodels have you found that would be good for terragen renders? linkys?...
Great site! Thanks.
I found one site where the guy explains step by step how to recreate the Serenity in Lightwave. I'll try to find it, if anyone's interested.

That would be wonderful, Calico.
I have Max, only thing is that I have had problems with exporting the textures correctly. So if someone can tell me what settings I should use, I can export some meshes to obj.

I have exported many models from max to obj and I usually use the default settings and they work fine. However, if you are going to import that object in TG2 then you need to change face type from polygons to triangles and it wont crash TG2 (it works everytime for me :D)
There is one thing I notice that if the objects/models has UV embeded textures only then they will have proper texture info when you import them into TG2

Here you go:
Tutorial:http://www.lwg3d.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27346
Its a huge tutorial so have lots of fun.
The mesh is also available for download in LW format here:
Mesh:http://lwg3d.com/v3/meshes.php?item=537
You'll need to register to dl the model however.

This is a PDF file. I may have another link somewhere else for this, too. I'll look later.

COOL! Thanks, cyphyr. This is the other link I was talking about and thanks for the link to the mesh, too. Brilliant! Yeah!

Thank you both :)!
Your gona have sooooo much fun getting this into TG2, the model has um, now let me see, oh yes 228 surfaces and 178 images. I look forward to seeing a result :) Good luck

I will probably work on the 3D model and then wait for an update to the next TG2 level before trying that many textures. But, I need to "prepare". ::)
Chris diston "SGA-3d" who made this model said it can be used in terragen renders...
also waiting on a email to see if i can get my hands on a cinema 3d copy fully textured version:D...
Cinema 4D has a great renderer.

Don't you mean Cinema 4D? Or is this some other program I haven't heard of?
oh yeah..cinema 4d
anyway here is a test render just to show atlantis in TG2... no texturing yet but I'm sure that will come i have 2 other renders going i'll post better resolution....

a little be better

LOL Yes. Cinema 4D ::)

Glad we got the C4D thing cleared up ;). King, that second render is looking fantastic. Great job!
So many things to do! Here's another - http://www.cosmic-pearl.com/LW_XW1.htm
Some experimenting with getting max into obj... :D
max export to obj, obj-obj conversion in poseray... as the original max file has what seemed to be over 100 textures... and multishaders only support up to 16 :-[
(http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~rawjdmbj/test/arrowrunabout.jpg)
model is from scifi-meshes
more mesh conversions to come thanks to this new updated tg2 ;D ;D ;D
wow king tiger....how DID YOU DO THAT?
That rocks.....is there an obj of atlantis available or anything similar??? would really like to know where to get that.....
Aenea
send me a private message with your email and i will send the atlantis tgo

www.turbosquid.com . There should be a link for 'free' models on the front page, go there, and search around :P There's some pretty good one's, however most are in max..
yeah i have used turbosquird but not many scifi models on it, hope to get startrek voyager working soon:D
This looks awesome, though.

a little further down the track, took some time getting the light sources in place so there is warp cells... would be handy if surfaces could emit light... perhaps in a near future update?
updated jpg link
Here is a obj conversion of the startrek model from .max, it is 3.5mb zipped 20mb (uncompressed)
Also there is a tgd I have included which you will want you use from scratch or if you want to import this model into one of your existing works. open the tgd I supplied and copy and paste the node network for the arrow_runabout.obj enjoy
thanks to Mark Azevedo for the mesh and allowing me to share the conversion

What about trying something with the reflective shader by cranking the values?

I didn't try turning up the reflective shader... maybe thats worth trying?

Surfaces can allready emit light. Try the luminosity option... atleast the surface layer has it, and the deafault aswell I believe. It works, just crank up the values really high.
You also need to make sure GI is on for luminous surfaces to work properly. You don't necessarily need high values though.
