Title: Summit In Clouds Time Lapse- 720p Animation
Post by: Tangled-Universe on May 18, 2010, 07:03:38 PM
Hi everyone,

Here's a link to my latest animation; Summit In Clouds TimeLapse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzsRvieB6IQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzsRvieB6IQ)

The time lapse is made by animating a couple of parameters in the cloud-fractal and cloud-node.
For instance, fractal coverage and position is animated to make the clouds appear at the beginning of the animation and to make them move throughout the animation.
Other animated parameters are warp, cloud altitude and a new feature which allows to create an offset function for cloud depth and height.
If I can I will post an example which shows this principle better. It is used subtly here.

I hope you enjoy it :)

Cheers,
Martin

Nice work Martin.

Very nice. ;D Love the clouds move according to the terrain, makes it that much more believable.

Fascinating stuff, Martin. It's almost hypnotizing.

Ah, now I understand why you've been TG2-abscent more than usually :D

Looks very cool Martin! I wished you hadn't restricted the cloud distribution to just over the summit, but instead let them continue to float across the scene, though :)

Frank

My only suggestion for improvement would be to animate the sun as well, so there was a clearer sense of passing time. Very impressive though.

Would this new "cloud offset" feature also be useful for stills?

You're absolutly right and actually I have prepared a second version of this animation already.
This newer version will also have a camera-move animated and a 30 degree change in heading of the sun to give it more sense of passing time.

I didn't animate the camera because this way I would only have to render the cropped summit for each frame. Saved me LOTS of hours! :)

Yes the offset feature is certainly useful for stills. For instance you can have clouds following the terrain, like in a misty morning valley.
Or make a lenticular cloud. Or make a gradient offset to get a diagonal-like cloud similar to a smoking volcano.

Yes indeed. I haven't been much home lately, so I anticipated on that and started an animation :)
V2 of this anim will have a moving camera and perhaps it is also more interesting to make the clouds follow a bigger section of the terrain.
I also want to make them more wispy/turbulent perhaps.

Cheers,
Martin

This newer version will also have a camera-move animated...

Animating the camera is a very clever thing to do in this scene. That way you'll get rid of the most important issue.... the static vegetation. For me that's the biggest problem here and it is something that really ensures you it's CG.

Besides that I think this is really fantastic. The terrain is cool. The textures are nice and crisp and the lighting is spot on. I want to see more of this ;)

Terje

Yes, and also a very long rendering project :) I'm lucky Oshyan is always hungry for rendering these kind of things  :D

Believe it or not clouds often "stick" to mountain peaks like this, and actually disappear as they get further from the mountain. Here's an example: http://vimeo.com/9764153
and of course the classic Lenticular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPW1vpBgHEo
So really this is not such an unrealistic animation. Of course for artistic reasons you may want the clouds to extend beyond the mountain. ;D

I agree with this suggestion; and, maybe add a little tree branch movement from the wind. In all, you've demonstrated the wonderful capabilities of this program. Wonderful work Martin!
