Title: Volcano Final -page 3-
Post by: freelancah on February 20, 2011, 09:14:03 PM
Ive been learning Houdini 11 for the past 2 weeks now and got inspired by the new pyro tools. Planning to simulate the volcano smoke in houdini and comp to a terragen render. Haven't decided yet if I will attempt an animation but will see..

Currently the lava is made by 2 surface layers with color and illumination channels. Mask originally built in geocontrol as is the rest of volcano.. No atmosphere in the render due WIP phase.. Im still working on the lava and suggestions and ideas are welcome..

It's just one sessions work and I have lots of stuff to solve in houdini before it will be done.
PS. added a houdini pyro test, just for fun. It still sucks quite a bit, but Im slowly progressing ;)

This would be very 'cool' animated, indeed. How are you planning to do this; animate a round trip in TG2 and add the moving upheaval of smoke and flames from Houdini? Hard, but I can't wait to see your progress.

I was thinking something in the lines of that. I'm not exactly sure how to do it yet. I need to learn how to import/export camera so i can get things to match. I was considering comping the thing in AE and rendering the terragen scenes without atmo, if shot from above. It would be relatively easy to fake in postwork if no horizon is visible and it'd lower rendertime to around 1min/frame.
Also, I'm currently going thru a school course on AE so I would actually know how to use it now :D

Rendered another pre-shaded smoke test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7qF3CUyg78 The smoke moves way too fast but I think I like the overall shape. Need to do some texturing tests..

This might be helpful for the lava flows. Just plug this into your shaders stack and blend the three surface layers by your lava mask. The layers are altitude-limited to give the effect that the fresh lava near the top is hotter than the cooler lava below, then at the bottom, the lava flows solidify into black rock.

Thanks TBH. I'l take a look in case I might use it! Here's a small update on the progress. Im having most of my trouble in houdini so will see if I get stuck there

These pictures are great! I'm trying to work on volcano and this tgc will help me a lot! :)

Little update. I think the lava still needs some more work but think Il work on the surroundings for a change..
Metacomet: It's not really practical to share this file since the base is mostly made up with Geocontrol products: ter file, and the image masks. Folder for this scene is over 200mb with those masks..

Great update, and with some effort this can be a stunner.

Thanks guys. I did another render on the lava. What do you think? The displacement might be a tad bit extreme perhaps? But what about the color? Too hot?

The color looks very good. I really think you have it almost perfect.

Here's some reference... it's looking good so far, a little 'deeper glow' perhaps, but lighting it depends on being it a day or night scene I guess.

Wow I so did not get the scale on that from the small image!

Here's a little update. I think I made some progress with the lava shader and I think the left part needs some displacement similar to the right one. Any ideas?

Hi

Looks great!

Maybe You put some flat and very dark fakesones on the glowing lava.

Some work before going for a small vacation.
I split the main lava flow because it just seemed way to big and hard to work with.  The new masks obviously needs some more work but it will have to wait until I get back
Some houdini progress too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yt7GfGCSpM

That looks really good. The colors look fine, but for some reason the volcano looks small.

Quick test with some lowlight sunset moody atmosphere... Oh yeah there is another sun thats causing some fake reflection on the water.. ;P Will have to fix that

sorry I missed this thread till now...

I work with Houdini all day every day...so feel free to ask me any Houdini questions you might have

have you seen this?

Oh man goldfarb! I think you just solved all my problems! :D Ive been looking for something like that! Does the thing work with Houdini 11?  I will have to test in the evening! Thanks a bunch!
Also thanks Seth and Dune

Well it would seem Dune got me inspired enough to revive this project. The terrain has some bugs that I need to fix and the smoke is something I'm not yet pleased with...Will continue experimenting..

Wow! In my opinion the only thing that should be improved is the stones. Great work!
Title: Re: Volcano WIP -revived project-
Post by: freelancah on June 30, 2011, 05:22:30 PM
Yeah those were on the list. Actually fixed already but atm the problem is that there are some black render errors on the terrain here and there. Need to figure out what causes them and move on the clouds :P

Nice, Freelancah. Now you influence me to try something with different light and glowing lava... clouds are tricky, huh?
Title: Re: Volcano WIP -revived project-
Post by: Henry Blewer on July 01, 2011, 11:22:37 AM
The clouds are more like I wished Ulco made his, but with his vertical lift. The lava is very good. Fake stones can be tricky.

Small update... Worked on the background clouds and changed the volcano ashcloud too... Front maybe needs some vegetation or something..?

Tonemapped the image slightly

Post by: ra on July 08, 2011, 02:12:55 PM
This is great. However I think the clouds at the top are a bit too different from the ones below (other scaling perhaps). Also the top cloud looks to spheric I think... I hope you know what I mean? :)
The rest is awesome!

Great update Freelancah. Respect, indeed. Did you use the cone method to restrict your cloud? I also like the coloring. Terrific.

Post by: freelancah on July 09, 2011, 06:40:46 AM
Here's a small update on the ashcloud...
Dune The ashcloud has a warped simple shape and 2 distance shaders to create some puffiness

Next I think I'l turn the lava a bit more reddish and work on the surrounding terrain...

Here's the final update on this...

I decided to collaborate on the postkwork portion with a friend of mine from deviantart: http://blph.deviantart.com/ we tossed files back and forth untill we decided it was finished.

Love the sky in the 2nd to last image! The final is really cool too. Great stuff!
Also, I was wondering how hard it would be to do another variation where its a forest fire rather than a volcano. Haven't seen a Forest fire image as dramatic as the last image you posted. Or any?

One of the most amazing scenes I've seen on this forum.
The violence in the cloud is stunning and the trees and birds are so right.
Just how much is TG and how much post work?
Well done to both of you!

Thank you all! Kevin I'l see if I can post the versions that we did in a "timeline" which would show the non-postworked version too. I'l try to do it this evening

OMFG !!!
very very good job, man Oo'
the composition is great, the result is epic...
I hope you'll give hint on what TG2 did in this render !
it looks very like matte painting, and that is a compliment in my mouth, that shot is really impressive

Awesome work :)
Only the 2 foreground trees are a clear CG give away, else is just supercool :)

Cheers,

Thanks guys. I suppose it sould be called a mattepainting since there is some painting done here ;) Anyway here's the "timeline" from start to finish. The background that I swapped in the last image is a composite of bunch of terragen renders, alltho much of the detail went hidden after painting some shafts of light and whatnot. But anyway as you can see..the postwork is quite extensive :P
Originally saved out as 32 bit EXR and converted to 16 bit when I sent it to Chris and then we just iterated till it was done, fun stuff ;) Probably will still fix the values on the hill in the last image that seems to not fit
