Title: Terragen 2.3 Released with 64 bit Support
Post by: Matt on April 20, 2011, 11:07:36 pm
Terragen 2.3 is now available and includes a number of important new features. For the first time 64 bit versions are available, allowing for much more complex scenes on systems with more than 4GB of memory and a 64 bit operating system. Other features include a new colour picker and node palette. This update is free for all licensed users of Terragen 2!

Check out our release page for more information:

Wow! Actually arrived as promised, maybe even earlier than expected. Great job, Planetside!

Unfortunately, the system upgrade to 64-bit ain't free... I will be curious to see whether any of the previously mentioned (slight) performance hits on 32-bit systems on v2.3 were mitigated in the end or if slower renders are still to be expected.

Now it finally pays off that I bought that 64-bits system...!

Awesome, thanks Planetside.  Been busy so I've only been lurking forums occasionally but great to see this release is out.  Will need to fire up TG2 and play around with the 64bit awesomeness.

Great!  I see a 9% decrease in render time (current benchmark scene) with the x64 version.  :D

I believe there have been some adjustments/fixes to certain rendering characteristics, but the results should be an improvement and render time should generally be the same or faster for the 64 bit version vs 2.2 32 bit. In this case the 2.3 image does look better to me, what do you think? Did you record render times for these?

That sounds about right. So what are your thoughts on which is better detail-wise?

Think the quality is bether on the newer version.
More details at same setting. Notised a dark spot showing up in senter at the last render, but on the top part it looks mutch smoother.

This was a very simple scene with only surface layers controlled by angle + DandelO's Planetary Grass Shader.
Someone needs to make a tutorial for creating realistic mountains. Still fumbling in the dark there.

Has anyone else tried the new landmark object? It's very handy for judging scales and getting distances right.

After installing the newest version I noticed some of my files were missing. Some files I had saved under the main Planetside folder. There were over 50 or so...now after install I see 26 files. I had a New Work folder under the planetside folder with over 30 files and now I see only 8. I also lost clip files that I had left under the main Planetside folder. All the TGO files under the folder of the same name didn't loose anything...all my TGO's are still there. Does anyone know what would cause this....were the files overwritten if they are still on my hard-drive I can't find them using Terragen...any thoughts?

Did you install the 64 bit version or 32 bit? The 64 bit version installs to a different folder, so that may be why. Also what operating system are you using?

In general I would not recommend using program installation folders for data storage. This is particularly frowned upon with Vista and newer Windows versions.

I didn't think of that, it's a good use :-). I thought it would be handy for defining points of interest around the landscape. If you want to move a camera to one quickly you can use the "Snap to object or shader" submenu from the 3D Preview context menu or Reset Camera button.

Jo

The landscape object can be used to mark significant keyframes also. I have done this in Blender. But for the Deep Edition I use, usuing these for scale is a big help.

Hmm.. I just noticed the new node palette editor and thought of something from another program.. It would be nice to have a similar system of that of houdini. There you press TAB in the node window and it pops you a similar node palette but the difference is that it has a search function. You type the first letters of the node and it finds it for you, instead of browsing for stuff manually. Basically all you use is: TAB, type couple of letters, and press enter and it gives you the node.

Markal, that is strange. I wouldnt expect that to happen. Have you tried windows search for any of the missing files? Maybe there is a recent restore point you can go back to if they really are gone.
Title: Re: Terragen 2.3 Released with 64 bit Support
Post by: Oshyan on April 30, 2011, 05:09:08 pm
Restore points should not affect document/data files, only program files. Although I guess if they were in the program directory they might have been saved as part of a restore point. I agree though that a full system search is a good idea to try to see if the files are anywhere else. Unfortunately Windows Vista and 7 have terrible file search in my experience, so I'd recommend using a 3rd party Explorer replacement or search tool. Something like Xplorer2: http://www.zabkat.com/x2lite.htm

We don't have a specific release date for 2.3 free version, but they usually follow 1-2 months after the release to licensed users.

Just curious as I would have assumed it was tested before it was released to the paying users...all it needed was some restrictions ie: render size and detail/AA added in.. ...or is there other stuff free users won't be allowed access to?

Sometimes issues do show up, besides that the testers need time to test or need time to run into problems as they often show up during regular use.
Like Oshyan said it's being tested now so be patient :)

We like to run every release we make past the testers, even if the changes are very slight. This helps to give us confidence in new releases and saves both us and you time in the case something untoward happens with the release package which would otherwise mean we'd have to follow up quickly with a new release. Often when it comes time for a public release the last test is just to make sure the installer is working and basic stuff like that.

Jo
