This .tgd will render your terrain to greyscale. To adjust greyscale values, tweak the distance shader.
It's not perfect and needs adjusting, but I've had some pretty good results so far.

For Heightfields there is also the "shade by height" option on the Colour tab of the Heightfield Shader.
