Title: WRL or VRML
Post by: EdBardet on December 04, 2013, 03:30:56 PM
Is it possible to export either of these formats?
Thanx,
Ed

Hi Ed,

No, those aren't supported. For more information about TG's import/export capabilities check out this reference:

Thanks Jo-

Is there anyway to get output from TG to WRL or VRML for viewing with a free viewer?

Or an alternative.

Hints?

ED

Hi Ed,

What are you looking to do exactly?

Just exploring concepts.  What I'd like to do, since I can't see a way to get TG terrains into TurboCad, is to develop some models in turbocad and bring them into TG. Then save the total file in a format that could be seen, as 3D objects (WRL / VRML) using a free viewer. I know I could do it by preparing a fly by, but I'd like the user to be able to zoom in/out and move around the entire scene.

Many years back I used a product called VRWorx2.6 which allowed me to link various files into a good scenario, but the company is not in business anymore and I've lost my key (Dumb!!!)

Hi Ed,

You should be able to take TG terrains into TurboCad using the Micro exporter to create an OBJ. All that gets you is the terrain geometry however.

There is no way to export a TG scene in it's entirety I'm afraid.

You can generate assets to use in an interactive viewer. For example you could create a sky box. You can export a section of the terrain and render a top down orthographic view to get textures for it.

Thanks Jo,

I'll give that a try going into TC. The terrain is the important thing and I can texture it in TC. The terrain capabilities of TC are ------.

Can you suggest an interactive viewer?

Do you know (remember?) a product like VRWorx2.5 / 2.6? It was good and the company is out of business. Something must have replaced it.

Hi Ed,

I was talking about a theoretical interactive viewer :-). I was imagining what such a thing might allow and what you could generated in TG to use with it. I messed about a bit with VRML many years ago but haven't really followed it since. I do remember back then there were a few apps for authoring walkthroughs but I don't know about anything "modern".

Something which sprang to mind is the Blender Game Engine. I imagine it might be possible to make an interactive walkthrough in that. Here's something about that, although its pretty old:

EDIT: Here's a recent example:

Jo - My apologies :(

First of all we had a lightning strike in the neighborhood that wiped out cable and phone. Still don't have phone.

Secondly - I've written this note twice yesterday, previewed it and forgot to post. You can now see the level of idjut you are dealing with.

Anyway - thanks for the answers and your help.

One question about automation. I know you can pause the playback, but operator control (ala VT) is not possible. It looks like my best bet is to use TG as it was meant to be and a graphics package for the models. Put things together in a document.

I believe TG is an excellent product, even though I use classic for the basic work, but you need to develop a way for an external viewer to see the TG world in an interactive method. That would fill a void in the scenery/terrain development world. I FIRMLY believe that the sculpt feature should be returned.

Thanx, Ed

The traditional way to do this is to use the output of Terragen as a sky map. This is true for *any* non-interactive application that generates highly detailed renders that can't be reproduced in realtime. If you want to maintain quality, there's no way to make it interactive in realtime. If you just want the basic shapes like the terrain, then you can export the terrain as Jo mentioned above. Population data will probably be exportable for reading by other apps eventually so you could then use that to recreate populations in another app, since all the models are imported to TG anyway. But the bottom line is this isn't really what Terragen is intended for, i.e. complete creation of realtime interactive scenes. You can use it to create some game data assets, absolutely, and it's great for that, but as far as generating your complete scene, you might as well just do it in a more realtime-oriented app *because* most of the benefits TG offers are simply not reproducible in realtime.
