Good choice :) I can't say why I still remember the short story. I read as teenager too.
The TV show was a good show in general but a very free interpretation of Kings story.
Ans as I remember they discontinued the TV series with a cruel cliffhanger and a million oben ends.
The Movie with Thomas Jane and Laurie Holden was much closer to the book. A frustrating end - but an end ;)
But that's probably a matter of taste... :)
