Title: Speedtree Evaluation
Post by: WAS on September 07, 2018, 02:10:13 PM
I wanted to give speedtree a try again and decided to go get their evaluation, but apparently they just left the old eval page up, which points to no eval versions?

https://store.speedtree.com/product-category/applications/apps-eval/
https://speedtree.com/evaluate-speedtree.php

Is this just an issue on my end or did they remove evals?

Not to important, I'll never be able to afford the software but thought I could at least try modeling a plant. Lol

I didn't follow the whole process through but I got as far as needing to login and register after apparently having successfully added a trial version to a download cart.

Jeez. Haha. Seems there are some issues between remnants of their old website and the new.

We have SpeedTree 8.1.4 in my studio, which is the latest version of the program.  I use it quite a bit with TG.  It works fairly well unless you want tree movement.  If I need to trees to be blowing in the wind I need to go through several steps to do this.  I currently have to export an FBX (with animation) into Maya, then export an .obj for for each frame of the animation.  This process takes quite a bit of time as you c an imagine.  MY question; is there any plans for better SpeedTree integration into TG??

We are hoping to add Alembic support in the future. Does Speedtree support Alembic?

Yes SpeedTree supports Amblic IO, it also supports FBX, both with wind animation embedded.

I am enormously impressed by the game engine output of Lumberyard, Unity, Cryengine and UE4 and this is not in a small part due to their support of fine motion animation in vegetation.
Grasses and leaves softly moving in the breeze can really sell a scene. As far as I know Speedtree is the only package that creates wind effects "out of the box" and so supporting this in Terragen would be a huge benefit.
I know Terragen can support obj sequences but this is cumbersome in comparison.

I just recently asked about FBX animation populations and offsetting animations but it a plan for further down the road.

Alembic and or FBX import ability would be awesome.  Oshyan, what's the time frame for Alembic support implementation?

We do not have a publicly announced time frame for Alembic yet. You can see our 2018 plans here:

When 2019 rolls out we may provide an update, which would hopefully include Alembic.
