Yup, wind's blowin', snow's flyin', visibility is near zero - it's winter!

At the foot of the Laramie Range (Wyoming), a somewhat diminuitive finger of the Rockies (9,000+ peaks, a couple of which are nice picturesque rock points). Elevation here is about 6,950 feet - about ~700 feet or so higher than the summit of Mt. Washington (catch that, Will?).

The sun has come out and the temp has climbed above freezing, but there's still some pretty nasty looking stuff off to the west. Doesn't look like it's over quite yet.

Had some fun with the cats earlier. They weren't quite prepared for the change when they went charging out the door.    :D

Yeah, the mountain areas are getting snow.  On the front range of the CO rockies here we've got lots of clumpy snow clinging on branches and turning to slush.  Right nasty snowball weather, verily ..

Wow. That's depressing. It's just average here in London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London) (...maybe a bit chilly). British Summer Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_European_Summer_Time) ends soon. :'(

I really can't be bothered to convert all of those temperatures to celsius...

Everything you see blowing out into the ocean is smoke.

D - LaLa Land is a (somewhat derogatory) term used by Northern Californians to describe the southern part of the state; the south typically responds by calling the north the 'People's Republic of California'.

Sethren - I hope it stays away from you, kiddo! I saw some moron on one of the news shows standing in front of his  (15,000 square foot, probably) house insisting he was going to stay and fight the fire ('I've got 500 gallons of water...'). 500 gallons. When the Weimar fire threatened (and got close enough so we had a CDF truck parked at the foot of our property, with choppers filling their buckets from a pond right behind the house) I had 5000 gallons in a holding tank. The flames were advancing as crown fires through 150, 200 foot tall Douglas firs. All that bold talk of staying and fighting paled pretty damned quick, let me tell ya. Before the bombers stopped the flames, we were talking about jumping into the holding tank to try to survive. Trying to use it to stop the flames would have stood about as much a chance of succeeding as pissing on them.

Will - Really. Bummer. It's scary stuff. I grew up not too far from you ( in Vermont). I'm telling you, unless you've actually seen a Californian wildfire (can't speak for the rest of the West, having only seen big fires in Ca) you can't imagine. Watching the CDF fight them is incredible - the choreography of aircraft and ground crews, and just the scale of the fires.

I saw the Weimar fire up close and personal (close enough so the ground crews were within earshot of our house, shouting to one another through the woods), and I saw the Berkeley Hills fire (the one that burned ... what was it, 1500 houses? It was some ridiculous number.) from the other side of the Bay. It was amazing - it looked like half the Oakland side of the Bay was on fire. Just amazing...

<Edit>

Berkeley Hills Fire Statistics

Deaths.......................................................................................25

"Bring on the snow"     :P

Luckly where i am at the fires are far away enough but being in this area for 31 years i have never seen anything quite like this, still there is a haze of ash in the air i can see everywhere. Just a few weeks ago some jerk arsonist lit our palm trees in the front yard on fire and it almost caught the house. I don't care what the california mentality is, we need some rain here.

re the arsonist - of course I suppose if you were to blow his head off, you'd be the one to go to jail... there's something to be said for the mindset here in Wyoming. Here, the sherriff would stop by and make sure the fire was out, then go about his business.

:D

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Wow. I've always wanted palm trees. Shame about the arsonist. I've only ever seen one living tree dry enough to burn (...which I did burn) - strangely, that was in the land of eternal rain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland)...

You can come here and take all the palms you need.  ;D   Actually it is illegal to remove/cut down a Palm Tree. It was someones crazy idea a long time ago to plant these things all over so-cal (An Image Thing  ::)) . I'd replace them with Oaks sense they are indigenous to the area.

Really? Why are there so many backwards laws like that!? Another odd one I've encountered is that it is illegal to take rocks from Teide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teide). It's not like they need them - it's a volcano! It will make more!

How have we managed to get to volcanoes and palm trees, when the title/subject of this topic/thread (I really hate the large range of terminology for these things) is 'It's snowing!'?

The well-documented phenomenon of thread drift.

:)
Title: Re: It's snowing!
Post by: Will on October 24, 2007, 06:42:51 PM
I'm actually taking a course on it very fascinating stuff it is, apparently the thread drifts at a speed directly related to that of ones worldly knowledge.
Title: Re: It's snowing!
Post by: Harvey Birdman on October 24, 2007, 06:56:21 PM
You're sure that's a direct relationship and not an inverse one?

;)
Title: Re: It's snowing!
Post by: Will on October 24, 2007, 06:59:21 PM
depends on the topic...though the prof. did say the people involved in the discussion have a great impact on its flow and drift.
Title: Re: It's snowing!
Post by: Dark Fire on October 24, 2007, 08:13:22 PM
I see. That explains why it's always threads that I'm involved in that drift horribly off-topic...

It's a good skill for instant messaging though... :D

In other news we do get snow in the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains here but nothing compared to up north.  ;D  It snowed in the Inland Empire once but that was back in the 50s i think. I heard from someone though just a few short years ago that there was a very light snow, more like a fine thin coat of white over the sidewalks until the warming air evaporated it away quickly.

I grew up in Big Bear Lake, and remember many snowy winters. I left in 1971 and have only been back a couple of times. It's a lot different here in the NW where all you see is rain. But at least it is green and not burning down.

Now thats how you cover all of the topics that have been covered in a deviated thread. ;D

Like sonshine I l now live in the cascades of Oregon, but was raised till 25 in the shadows of the LA foothills. Having been a wildfire crewchief for ten years I can telll you that nothing gets your heart beating like a three foot log on fire and rapidly rolling down hill to clipping you in the but. The real glow begins when your fire hose snaps you up short sixty feet below the cliff you just got knocked off of.

Speaking of arsonists and other vermin I kind of wonder if the drug cartels of the Mexican border region are not gaining something in the way of rights of passage from having all the California national guard being recalled from their border watch to fight this possibly enemy created catastrophy? I even wonder if California is paying for the cheap cost of an Al Quaida funded cross border assault by anti-American coyotes? I doubt our US Government controlled news media  will let anything like that get beyond  the grassroots suspicions category.

Nicely done.   :D

Arisdemos - wow! I tell you, I have a lot of respect for the guys that fight those things. I swear, the sight of the one good one I saw up close was one of the most awesome things I've ever seen. Massive Douglas Firs just absolutely exploding from the heat... flames literally hundreds of feet in the air over these big stands, and four-engine bombers actually flying below the tops of the flames and pinwheeling their aircraft on a wingtip like a fighter, throwing retardant nearly sideways, then making just miraculous tree-top scraping escapes down-valley... friggin' cool, dude.

Here in Kansas we were enjoying ~75 degree weather on tuesday and then Friday night we got snow and this morning there was about an inch on the ground. In my opinion that has to be a record. (granted it all melted today.)
