Title: Artefacts with lights / atmosphere ?
Post by: iaminonsiner on December 04, 2018, 07:19:04 AM
Hello creators.

I'm new here and also on Terragen. I've been using it for a few days and I think it's really incredible software but I have some problems with it.

I think that an image is better to understand my problem and English is not my native language so:

Like you see, when I make a "dark" rendering ( a night landscape), I have problems with the light or the atmosphere, I don't know where the problem comes from. There are lines everywhere.

Do you know where it could have come from? I have tried several different settings I still have the same problem and I don't have it in a bright landscape, a day landscape.

Welcome to the forum. I get the feeling that these lines are jpg artifacts/compression. If you also see them in a tiff, it must be something I can't answer.

Thank you.

I converted to JPG for the forum but I have the same problem with the basic format (TIFF)...

This is more than likely a bit depth issue. Did you save your render as 8 bits or 16 bits?

But still... in a 8-bit tiff this shouldn't be.

Always 16 bits, I will try to render in 8 bits.

Do you have any effects active? Bloom?

Do you see the banding in Terragen's render view as well?

8 bit image formats (most common web image formats) do not have enough subtle variations of color to smoothly represent some gradients like this. In 16 bit it should be fine. So my guess would be you are getting a bad conversion from 16 bit to 8 bit (and possibly bad display of 16 bit in your image viewer/editor too), which very likely comes from somewhere else in your workflow. A good conversion will apply dithering to hide these kinds of issues in 8 bit. Terragen applies dithering internally when saving to 8 bit formats, but not - I think - when using 16bit or greater, so your image editor would have to do this.

I don't think so...

Ok, thank for your help. So, what is the solution? Do I have to render in 8 bits? Sorry I'm really new to the software so there are some things I don't understand yet.

What program/software did you use to open the render (16 bit) and then save it so you could post it here (8 bit)? The solution may be in your image editor/viewer software.

If you would like us to look into this, you can send your 16 bit original render file (if you still have it) to support AT planetside.co.uk

I open my files  just with a double click, so the Windows Viewer ! But I opened in other programs and also on my phone and the problem is still here. On some images, it makes straight lines, as if they were columns of colors and in the end, it's not at all uniform. I think the problem comes from me and the settings in Terragen.

My bad, I have " anti-aliasing " bloom on one file, I will try to disable it and try new render.

I don't think AA Bloom should interfere at darkness levels like this, but it's possible.

Please send us your original 16 bit file, we will investigate. If possible it would also be helpful for you to provide one of your .TGD files for creating a render that demonstrates the issue.

Ok, I will see that, thank you !
