Title: New to terragen need some help please
Post by: Jahuntl on March 16, 2019, 11:08:04 am
So I am new to terragen and theres gobs of tutorials I found for using it. However I am trying to figure out this DEM thing. Not so much how to use them as there are tutorials, but I am trying to find like jagged mountain tops and a big pointed mountain like on the old MGM logo. How do I go about finding areas that have the type of terrain I am looking for?

Welcome to the forum. Try this before you go hunting for DEM's.

TY for the File I will take a look at it before bed see what I can make of it

Well Played around watched a couple tuts to understand the interface and then just pushed some buttons. came out decent but It is too cool I want to get rid of the haze and the blueish color. took 48 mins to render lol I made it 4K pixels for fun and as the render ended it gave me the not responding as it finalized but I got a nice screenshot.

little dark but I can play more

only took me abt 30 mins to whip this out

you will get the Not Responding message till TG actually finishes the render. It always does that even on short renders.

TY and lol ok I thought was MGM. anyways this program is a little daunting so much to learn to it. I played around trying to get the blue and the haze away and the colors then sucked so I have lot to learn. most the tutorials arent the greatest, i mean they show things but not really explain things if you know what I mean. they just show how to make something but not explain the worklings of the prog all that well.

I still need to figure out how to do the dem file thing  and the resources you get how to install them into library or whatever to use in other stuff but today I can spend time finding better tuts and info. I mishmashed a bunch of terrains together for a compositing monthly for fun contest we were given a little hobbit house but my terrain looked awesome and would love to recreate it in terragen  so I have a nice file of it. so thats where I am going with it next is to learn how to recreate stuff I put together in composites and create terrains based on them.

Have you searched here under 'using DEM files'...lots of chatter on that subject....

Because DEMs are real-world terrains, the best way to find something that looks like the terrain you want to download is to *find a real photo of a place first*. If you can find a photo that shows something similar to what you want, and the location is identified, you can find a DEM of it. If it's in the US the data will be highest quality, but there is still OK data worldwide, too. For the easiest DEM download experience use http://terrain.party/
For higher quality and more options, especially for 3 meter and 1 meter DEM data in some areas of the US, use the USGS National Map viewer:

the 4 markers I am using for the area is

1:
lat 40 deg 23 min 16 sec N

Long 105 deg 33 Min 26 sec W

2:
lat 40 deg 23 min 16 sec N

Long 105 deg 31 Min 58 sec W

3:
lat 40 deg 24 min 03 sec N

Long 105 deg 34 Min 32 sec W

4:
lat 40 deg 24 min 03 sec N

Long 105 deg 334 Min 39 sec W

I am using SRTM 1 arc second global  but its giving me some BIL file not a dem

Ok I figured out how to import a dem file at least

I see it reading stuff but nothing shows on my screen

BIL is a format of DEM. DEM just means "digital elevation map", although there is a .dem format, it is quite old and the term "DEM" just generally refers to any real-world data these days.

Earth Explorer is good for worldwide data, but does not have the best resolution data of the US.

When you load a DEM, Georeferencing is enabled by default. This will place your terrain in its real-world position on the full planet model in Terragen. If you need georeferencing, then you need to locate the terrain, but if you only want to load the terrain and don't need it located in the proper spot on the planet, just disabled georeferencing and you should see it show up at the 0,0,0 coordinate origin where the camera is by default.

Also GeekAtPlay has a new series of tutorial videos on DEM import which may help you:
Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckzkerx5WLA
Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws12A3eM50Y (likely more helpful for where you are)

The problem stems from the tutorials I been watching are for earlier references of terragen. When I tried to find georeferenceing in 4 i couldnt locate it to turn it off. I think thats whats messing me up. earlier versions vs mine the stuff is in totally different places and some i cant find

Thanks I been busy last few days I been trying I got getting the Dems in I got the georeferencing thing down and understood  Now my struggles is getting the image or area from the photo I have seen. For example Castle Mountain I pulled the DEM and loaded it but trying to find the area in the picture same with Gem lake lol its gonna take a bit but i am very slowly learning[attachimg=1]

Are these last two Terragen images? Your hobbit house image is certainly doable in Terragen with a little more familiarity to the program. Can't wait! Good luck, et al.  :)

No those images I found looking for terrain I liked. Then I found and downloaded the DEMs for them. But for all the moving around I do I cant seem to find e the spots created from The dems of the area

Have you tried re-positioning the camera in the top view with shaders active so you can see where the water is?

Right click where you want the camera and select Copy Coordinates and paste to the camera...in the top view it's easier to rotate around the Y  and the go back to Current render camera and tweak in the camera's transforms dialogue

Ok I figured the right click thing lol but still trying to figure out where the view is I want to be. I downloaded the dem for El Capitan last night because i figured you cant miss a big huge rock lol I was wrong. Still trying to get there. I think this will be my hardest part of the program to navigate where I want it to go. Second is there a way to pop behind and to my camera as I try rotating around to get behind the camera to view from its point and I end up everywhere but behind the camera?

Ok so I have the coordinates of the mountain

Latitude: 37-44'03'' N
Longitude: 119-38'16'' W

Now how to put those coords into my camera I only see one line under camera then a line for rotation

I think I found my problem I must be doing something wrong. I copy the coordinates to the location then goto my render camera and paste them but my camera didnt move

Maybe I am pasting them in the wrong place

Remember to update your current render camera view in your 3D preview window. You might have to back away or elevate from ground level camera position with your navigator in 3D preview, then reset render camera again. You may have pasted your camera co ordinates right in the center of mountain and be inside your terrain.  :)

I did reset render camera  but the camera didnt move was still on the new file place

When you Paste the coordinates into a Camera your current view in the 3D preview is "detached" from it and becomes a Perspective view. If you re-select the camera from the 3D Preview camera dropdown you should see the correct view.

Camera movement can be quite fast, it depends on what you are using for movement. I prefer the keyboard+mouse Alt+mouse button approach (covered in the docs). If you are using the camera movement widget in the 3D preview, the control at the bottom adjusts how fast movement is.

Finding specific coordinates can be challenging, it's true. We don't currently have lat/long available for positioning anything other than georeferenced terrain and image files. I would suggest perhaps trying to find the terrain feature you want in a real-world map/terrain view like Google Maps, then see what it looks like from an above/satellite view, and use that to look for a similar area in Terragen.

thanks yes when I try to put coords in for the camera it only gives 2 spots I withed you could pop the long and lat in for the render camera only thing I found was copying the coords for the entire dem area. I will eventually get it. I dont give up just get frustrated. eventually I will just find a nice terrain somewhere in the mess and go with that. also I keep forgetting the radar stuff for the dems prob also includes under water too which throiws things off when looking for a place
