Title: Stop Excessive Disk Usage: Get Rid of compattelrunner.exe
Post by: PabloMack on September 15, 2019, 05:02:45 PM
I have been very unhappy with how Microsoft windows has a gazillion programs running even when my system is idle and it is supposed to be doing nothing. This is the thing I hate most about Windows. There is way too much crap running and Microsoft is spying on your files as they do it. They call it "telemetry". Sometimes I have had to wait for a long time for my Windows 7 system to boot in the morning with the disk light going on and on and on and on............................. So I investigated and saw that compattelrunner.exe was hogging my disk and performance. Seems that many people are seeing vast improvement by just getting rid of it so I did it myself. Sounds like this program isn't actually doing much useful if you have Windows 7 because it is no longer being maintained and I don't plan to "downgrade" it to Windows 10. It was a pretty easy process and my system boots faster and disk I/O is much lower.

The more worrying issue, in my opinion, is the fact that an update for Windows from two weeks ago, has completely ruined many machines, causing countless bottlenecks, freezes and even preventing numerous programs from running.

I am also a member on the GTA forums and it turned out that many members of the community have started to experience crashes in GTA after about five minutes into the game. They also complained that ever since the new update, they couldn't, in fact, run any game at all. Mysteriously, I have also received numerous "on-exit" crashes right after this update and couldn't even revert the system properly for the first time!

I have no idea - how can a regular OS update wreak havoc on so many systems? But this, combined with your findings, is obviously a sign that something is very wrong.

Hmmm I also have issues with my W10 installation since about a little bit over a week ago.
Suddenly USB overcurrent warnings, unexpected crashes without any trace in the windows event viewer, no LAN available upon bootup and needing to reboot, not responding to reboot command for many times and probably more...
First may sound like a hardware issue (and most likely is), but all these issues started to show simultaneously and that's odd...

Strange. I have Win 10 with the latest updates. No problems so far. I don't play any game, but at least all my graphics stuff runs smoothly.

Exactly what happened on my system. And yes, I have also experienced the BSoD with a USB driver-related error code.

As far as gaming goes, I ran an elaborate modification for my version of GTA which was a perfect and clean install. After the update it started to break down on plugins from reliable authors who never made any programming mistakes.

If the problems you are having are serious enough, you may try to revert the system. In my case it helped. But curiously enough - only after the second revert. The first one has left my computer unresponsive and I had to cancel it and try again.

Here is more information if anyone would like to know more:
