Title: Marvelous Designer
Post by: sboerner on November 06, 2019, 12:30:00 AM
Anyone familiar with Marvelous Designer (https://www.marvelousdesigner.com/)? The demo and tutorials look impressive. And if I'm reading the FAQ correctly the "personal" license applies to individual freelancers, and seems like a pretty good deal.

Only hesitation is that I'm not sure I'm ready to learn yet another software application. (On the other hand, making clothing in Maya is a real pain.)

You make your people from scratch, don't you? Not posed from a rigged T-shape. If so, I don't know if the clothes made in MD would fit a pre-posed figure. I think you have to make them for a T-shape and then pose all. But I have no experience.

My people (I like that phrase :)) are T-pose models rigged in Maya. So maybe they would work. Would be worth exploring. They offer a 30-day free trial so when my current project's done, and I can devote time to it, I'll give it a try.

Hi
I had a brief encounter with Marvelous Designer 6.5 back then.

First thing: ask them, wether you are allowed to use the Personal Edt or not.
Just to be safe. And maybe try the 30-day Demo. It is (was) a demanding application in regards to computer power.

It is a very specialized software application. For occasional usage it might be overkill.
If you need clothing for character a often it surely is a good choice I`d say.
To get convincing results you have to put some effort in - not unlike any other program.

There was no need for a T-Pose. The clothing pattern could be simulated on any mesh, as far as I remember.
It took also Daz3D characters if you use that. There was even a preset setting for import and export.

OBJ, FBX, Alembic and other common file formats could be im- and exported.
Also point caches in and out of MD. It was possible to simulate on animated meshes as well.

MD behaves like any other simulation software I think.
The more polygons aka mesh detail you have to simulate the clothing upon the longer it takes to get good results.
My impression was then that a lot of artists use MD to get a good simulated basic mesh of cloths which were then
brought into another application (mostly ZBrush it seemed) to do further detailing.

But I do not know how far MD has evolved. It is version 9 by now after all.

It was fun to use but I did not have enough use for it.

On the other hand with all subscription models in licensing today - if you can afford try for 1 year and see if it is worth the investment.
My2cents.

CHeers, Klaus

Her tutorial about the simple jacket "Making a jacket from scratch" was what I watched back then. It is a nice introduction.

Thanks, Klaus. That's all good information and good advice. The enterprise license is far beyond my price range (and that of most individual freelancers, I would think). So checking with them is a good idea.

I get the impression that it would take a lot of time to master. Seems to be targeted as much to the fashion industry as to FX.

I was in a conference a couple months back regarding a game in dev, and from what I gathered, they had their own MD department and artists specializing in doing their character clothing meshing.

I can't say much, but I can agree with Klaus about 3rd party applications to detail, which was part of the main department of artists.

Thanks for that insight, Jordan. It seems to be the sort of software/workflow that people could specialize in. (That's one of the things that gives me pause, actually.)

Marvelous Designer responded very quickly to my question. Their policy is very clear as it turns out. As long as you work alone, you can purchase a Personal License, regardless of whether it is for a hobby or for commercial use. A very fair policy. Here it is:

Quote* Enterprise / Personal License Policy
Our personal license allows personal/sole proprietor use including commercial use.
If you are working alone, you could purchase a personal license.
If you hire any employee/ part-timer, you would need to purchase an Enterprise license for your purpose.

I was on the same conference mate! How we couldn't meet?
Oh were you? I don't remember a Victoria in call unless that's a nickname.

... Lol nevermind.

Just noticed that Marvelous Designer is offering 30 percent off all licenses through April 20. Seriously considering this and have downloaded the trial.

Huh, I wonder if it's regional? There's only one sale on Annual, but it's 50% off. Honestly not a bad annual price either, if it was concurrent with the sale deal (unlikely).

When I visited the site today the home page still says "$50 per month" but the pricing page gives $35/month. So no mention of a sale now but the prices are still 30 percent lower than what they were before. Strange.
