Title: Going on
Post by: Kadri on December 28, 2019, 06:55:21 pm
Hi all,

I had no good computer and not much will to do anything lately.
After my old pc died i had to buy something cheap.
Luckily AMD's chips are great these days. I bought a Ryzen 7 2700X.
Not the newest but still works great. Better then my last computer for sure (2-3 times faster).

Had a hard time doing something decent.

Any critics and suggestions are welcome.

Whoa that's cool, Kadri. Very alien like. I like the flying creatures. Nice touch. Is that the station from previous renders?

Thanks and yes Jordan it is.

I made the plants and kinda creature objects for the VR Contest actually. First time i use them.

These are different test renders.

The desert one is the oldest and started because of you Jordan you remember  :)

Really like the evolution of this scene. It's almost like time passing.

Hey man, good to see you back. It feels very strange when people just disappear (off to FB I immediately suspect :P ). Great scene too. No crits, I love it. Keep posting. Your new rig can handle much more, so that's great.

Welcome back and great work as usual.
I am intrigued by the structures. How did you make these? That would be an incredible amount of work to hand model. Is there a tool of somevsort that cam make these skeletal meshes?

Mostly it was manual modeling. It is the same object i used in another scene. More detailed answer is here Richard:

I made a very basic flat plane with the same surface and populated it over the structure in the background to get a little different look.
That is the only real difference from the foreground model in general.

I am very glad to hear that it was (only) a computer that kept you away. Welcome back and what a render this is! Super cool work, congrats!

I am trying to make a basic animation of this scene.
30 second or so. The first image above rendered in 26 minutes in HD.
My old system would have rendered in 70 minutes or so. So why not.

I was making small renders to see how the camera move looks.
The memory use was 27 gb after 300 frames (of 1000 frames).

I wanted to play a little Diablo 3 as Terragen rendered.
Diablo 3 refused to open and Terragen vanished ;D

My thoughts was to buy a pc with at least 64 gb memory and possibly 128.
Hopefully 2-3 years later.

Not that the scene couldn't be more optimized. Just reopening Terragen might be help too (now it is 16 gb in use) etc.
I just slapped everything on it without regards to this kind of problems.

But this is kind of the first time i can feel the 32 gb is not enough situation.

Especially after working on a file for quite a while and continually opening and shutting RTP, my feeling is that memory is clogged, and you're prone to crashes. For final renders (or continued working) it may be best to close TG and open a new session. Especially when doing other stuff too.

Yes it looks so Ulco.

RTP is especially crashy with populations while populating, moving etc.

I use the old v.4.1.21. Newer ones might be more stable i don't know.
