Finally a landscape again...
Like most of the time not knowing what I was doing, I planted a portion of Mick's columnar rock study:
https://planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,23444.msg237239.html?sslRedirect#msg237239
on top of a loaded heightfield and looked for a nice spot.
The ruin and the boat are from Sketchfab. Rendered with the path tracer (really a big improvement for the plants!). Original resolution 3556X2000 px, rendertime 15 and a half hours, rescaled, a little more contrast and finally some chromatic aberration.
There's a minor cheat. There was an edge of the ruin's terrain base poking through the terrain. I rendered a little crop without the ruin, and comped it in in PS.
I think they should have a job skill....on vacation. I would work everyday, 16 hours minimum. ;D
Great scene!
Looks great. Nearly like a painting. Especially the background.
Very atmospheric, nice.
Terrific. Almost magical realism. Very subtle wake is a great addition too. Details like that sell a render. The only thing I would not be satisfied with 100% is the sky; some strange hard areas, especially upper right. But that's nitpicking ;)
It's a great scene and it looks a little like a painting to me.
Small details make out a great render and I've seen the water over the paddle on the left, some ripples here would be a good idea.
The ony thing I personally would add is some lightning from the right side coming through the clouds. But that's nitpicking as Dune said.
And forget about the little cheating here and there... What really counts is the result and the final outcome of such a picture.
A great render Hannes!

Nice one! Those ruins look terrific!
Gorgeous rendering. Love the lighting, background. The ruins look like a natural feature at first, startling when you realize they are artificial. Well done.
Another WOW landscape...to me it's perfect...well done....
Thanks guys! Yes, the sky is not perfect. I tried about 140000 different cloud formations ;) and was a bit fed up with it eventually. But I might find a better one.
Dirk, do you mean broken up clouds to the right or additional illuminating from the right side?
I won't use additional light sources. It might look very odd, since the right part is in the shadow, because the sun is more or less at 3 o'clock position.
A masterpiece 👍

Incredible !
Just Wow, fantastic magical mood and wonderful use of vegetation and objects.
I seem to smell the fresh smell in the air after the rain. Think of the Lord of the Rings.
I mean something like this Hannes... soft and gently, but clearly visible.
The light should come out from the right between the two mountains (out of the Valley). Like a tunnel or stroboskopic effect.
This would fit perfect also with the person who wooks a little bit in this direction. It will give your rendering a tasty and impessive note in my opinion.
A littl bit like this.jpg
(But that's only my personal view...)

Yeah, just point a mask at the sun for a hole in the sky.
I know, what you mean. Actually there are no clouds obscuring the sun, so no need to drill a hole in the clouds. I tried several sun positions, and this was actually the one that had a nice balance between light and shadow. Positioning the sun to a place similar to Dirk's suggestion created a very dark and shadowy image. I'd like to keep it realistic, so I won't use second suns or such things.
But I'll keep on trying... :)
In the meantime a version with a bit more blue sky...
I love both versions :D
Great light, sense of scale ....
your 1st version is my new desktop background :-)

I like this better in terms of sky, though the first had something brooding. Great piece anyway!

Thanks, Ulco!
I like this second one much more! Unbelievable good.
I've seldom seen so beautiful clouds.
So many nice details! Great

Thank you!! The clouds are two sets of altocumulus castellanus (small and large) almost out of the box.
Yes the second version looks better than the previous one in my opinion.
Great moody atmosphere (and the castel rocks definitely!).

Wow! This is *really* nice !
Mad Skills, Broseph.
Scale in the river channel is great, and the ruins plus upper displacement really adds the sauce.
Maybe this one is better but i like the first one more. I think because it does have the old stormy kind of paintings feeling.
Thanks again!
Although I prefer the second one as well, here is another one with different lighting and some (hopefully) dramatic sky.
Oh wow! A John Constable - or Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot? Good job again!
Anyway very close to everything I knew about romantic art style paintings.
Yeah, cool. But (yes, it's me again) some remarks; some of the distant rock outcrops are a bit too much (laterally), and I would soften the clouds, they look a bit artificial. But the light is wonderful.

Thanks a lot, Ulco! Which outcrops do you mean?
I didn't touch the terrain. I'm quite happy with it, but I softened the clouds by reducing the edge sharpness. In the previous version the fog had a slightly blueish tint. I made it neutral for this version and also tinted the clouds a tiny little bit orange to get a warmer look.
This is great! Clouds are way better now. Now for the outcrops, check this. With a simple shape mask you can easily get them out I think (if you want, of course ;) ).
This one is for you, Ulco! ;)
I had not changed the lock screen on my phone since 2009. But today I did! Thank you Hannes :)

Thanks Hannes, looks terrific. You gave me an idea there, Matt. I have to see how to import a screen to my phone. Using one of my own, though :P

That makes a nice focal for a portrait crop.
This is a fun scene. I like the lighting a lot with the vegetation.
Feel the greens may be too strong in the trees but may just be me.
Thanks a lot, guys! You make me happy!! ;) :)
Hi Hannes, knowing you there are usually more iterations of your work and also this one progressed from really good to really great.
The only minor critique I may have is that the overall colour palette is somewhat uniform.
Very cool scene layout and composition. Very atmospheric as well and I like the greens better in this latest version.
This is great. Wonderful mood, great composition and details. Well done, sir! Not even sure which version I like best as they are all great in different ways.
