Title: Procedural tarmac road
Post by: james adamson on August 05, 2020, 10:20:05 AM
Hi all.
Does anyone have any ideas how I may go about building a tarmac road? I read a pretty long thread from 2010/11 and the artist achieved some very nice results but the link at the end to purchase his pack on NWDA took me to some Japanese motoring site.
At the moment I have built something in Modo and have imported it as as an obj but I would much prefer a Terragen solution.
Cheers.
James.

You can use a plane and mix several road texture with a powerfractal:

Then add on top some procedural or small detail textures such as this:

This can give great results and it is also very flexible!

Thanks Kyl they look great.
I have not used a plane yet in Terragen, how would i get that plane to form a curved road and then texture with no repeats?

There are some tips on the forums about curved road, or you could use a painted mask.

For the texture repetition you can merge your road over itself: add a transform input shader and put a negative scale on X or Y, and merge it with the original road using a merge shader with a powerfractal.

I made this a couple years ago. You're free to learn from it. This was intended for closer shots to the asphalt.
