Title: Windblown grasses
Post by: Dune on August 19, 2020, 08:21:48 AM
Some simple ZBrush grasses in low poly version (for distance) and high poly version. Windblown. You can make several combinations and restricted rotations (say 0-160º), and/or rotated base object, for different effects.
They are kind of pointy, but there's also an opacity mask.

Files won't all fit in one post, so will be continued hereafter. Put all in one folder.

For these two tests I sized the instances 0.5-1X and rotated both pops max 160º. Instance distance was 1.25m. If you reduce the grasses size to more lawngrass-size, that should be decreased as well, of course.

Enjoy!

Is there supposed to be a grass opacity tiff included in these files? Or are you using the jpg files shown? I will try that. How would I get rid of the pesky error message if that works? Can I resave as a new tgo? Talking to meself always helps.... :)

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. When I render the TGO's there is nothing there. Although I do see them in preview screen.  I'm running TG 4.1.24, not sure if that makes a difference.

The opacity mask is in one of the zips. If you unzip all in one folder it should work, as they all call the same opacity tif (no jpg). The TG version won't make a difference.
The opacity mask is basically just a white standing triangle on small black square. If you don't want to use it the grass still looks good enough. You can make all sorts of changes within and save as tgo again.
Let me check on my other machine what happens when I unpack what I posted. I wanted to post as tgo's, but some are too heavy.

Btw. if anyone wants a specific version, let me know; they are very easy to make.

Seems like I forgot to include the opacity mask. It's a .tif, but I renamed to .jpg in order to be able to post it. So, rename it again to .tif and put in same folder!

Maybe just reload object from object editor making it your path to object instead of Dune's?
Resave tgo file and reopen file after this usually does the trick. :)

There was nothing because the opacity mask missed. But it's uploaded above now. Just rename into .tif and add to grasses folder.

Please allow me to add some realistic average grass colours here...

@Stormlord: Thinking of my front yard in summer, there should be additional colors of yellow (grass is distressed), brown (grass is dying) and white (grass gave up and died)
:)

Thanks Dirk.
Grass colors are pretty variable, but I always have trouble finding the right values, so these'll come in handy.

TRUE GRASS COLOUR TABLE TAKEN FROM REAL LIFE IMAGERY
-------------------------------------------------------------------

@Ulco
Yes Ulco, that's why I created the colour table.
But I've found 2 more, just put them in your grass folder, so you have the right RGB values at your fingertips.

TIP
I have one folder only for colour tabels on my computer.
Often I have used satelite imagery to find the average colours also for sand, rock, water, lakes during a research process to create some stuff.

Sometimes its very tricky to find the correct values, but own photos helps a lot.
The chart which I postet first is the best color chart which you can use, when you will have true life in your grass renderings.

The other 2 tables posted here have been created based upon own reference images which I shot in spring/summer 2019 directly in front of my house.
I processed the shots at the same time after the shooting to make sure to have the same lightning while looking at the scenery directly from my computer.
So I could look closely from my screen and compare it directly with what I saw, when I watched out of my window. The best real life comparison you can have!
So believe me, these colours in these photos are the real true life colours. It's as closely as it can get, so they're excellent as references!

And the greens in detail / Allow me to remark the slight differences and the fine nuances of the green colours

I shot them directly in front of my house through my window and tried to process them on my computer at the same time.
So I had the advantage to see them on my computer and process them at the same time I could look directly at the green in front of me.
So I had the chance to find the true life colors, which makes this colour chart so valuable.

Here comes the chart within the picture...

You see 5 rows of 3 different green colours.
The row in the middle are the average gras colours which can be found in the picture.
Colours rows above are a little bit exaggerated and below they are a little underestimated.

But you see at a glance the true life colours here...

@all
Save it and you're blessed!
