Title: EXR rendered sequences?
Post by: JimB on December 03, 2007, 10:53:52 AM
Just asking, in case I'm missing something; Can you save an animation to EXR format? I can only save as BMP so far, which is no use at all for production.

It's been answered before, I'm sure, but couldn't find anything using Search.

Good question - I would guess that it's not actually possible right now, but I'm sure that feature wouldn't be too tough to add.

Yes... animation sequences can be dumped out to EXR as easily as any other format that TG2 writes out.  There is no difference between processing a single frame or a sequence.

Care to share how to do it? I tried in the output options but no joy; BMP only.

Just replace the .bmp with .exr

ex. Sequence/Output - Output image filename - C:\Desktop\temp%04d.exr

That sounds too simple to be true ;) ;D.

It's true, I confirm :). The only thing to do is to rename the extension from .bmp to .exr - or any other supported format, I guess

It does, but I've tested it. 8)

It is exactly as simple as that... just replace the extension.  We have produced many sequences this way and tis about as strait-forward as you can get.  Just make sure you have a tool to utilize .exr sequences.

Thanks for that very simple solution (slaps head). Works an absolute treat.

I think I kind of knew this but didn't know this.
I have looked on Planetside website and in my doc but can't seem to find a complete list of supported image formats.
Anyone know where it is ?  (hoping its not on page 1 :-()

on checking the output of the renderer it appears the only legal file types for rendering are:

unfortunately no PNG :(    (it would be smaller I think and it carries the alpha)

Neon, I believe you're correct that those are the only currently supported formats. We'd like to expand that support but it's not a priority currently as the existing options are functional, if not optimal.

Yes, PNG does carry the alpha data inside of it. I use this format a lot for transparencies. I do not think it is any smaller then say a BMP, i may be wrong though.

EXR rocks.

PNG would be nice someday, I guess.  Wish I understood PNG's capabilities better.  Sethern, do you think TG2 would benefit from having a PNG save?
