The so planet has a bunch of drunk cows is what we're implying here.
Its interesting that they found an organic precursor molecule such as methane on an extra-solar planet all be it one of the "Hot-Jupiter" class but still it shows how far the study of these ESP's has come in a short time frame. It would be interesting to have a look at their data particularity the Absorption Spectra in the raw data as it was received by the ground station.
We only have one model for life and how its behaves and that is the model we know here on Earth and what we know of where life can survive is rapidly changing for example quite complex ecosystems around deep sea vents with vary high temperature water coming out of them. What this means is we should not assume the Earth life model as a prerequisite throughout the universe as different planets with their unique conditions of gravity, temperature, atmospheric composition and so forth plus the known age of the known universe it is not hard to theorize that under such conditions life would develop and evolve differently form what we know.
If we go out and explore deep space (Humans not robotic space probes) as we might given the technological base and social will to do so; if we go looking for life by the strict definition of life found on Earth then when humans set foot on those worlds life forms could be missed that are right under foot due to people expecting one thing only in the place that they are in working vary differently.
At this time it is not known the percentile of ESP's that have water much less the percentile of that planet's surface that is covered by water and pure speculation as to weather life forms inhabit that water; we could for example theorize that in the history of evolution on one of these ESP's that water maybe toxic or harmful in some other way to one or more of the life forms there; indeed life on these worlds may not require water at all for cell function or any other of its life functions.
Again the view held by the scientific community that for there to be life there must be the presence of liquid water is again an Earth centric one that may or may not be true else where in the universe; by focusing the search for life on planets with water maybe limiting the list of potential candidate worlds where there is the possibility (Even a remote one) for life to exist, that is to say that if there is a chance for life then life will find away.
