If you dobbelt click on the watershader in the node network, a view is created in the node network.
If you in the lake object selects surfaceshader, and go to the watershader, the view is created in a selfstanding window!
I can't seem to reproduce this. The normal behavior is that nodes opened from the Node Network or from the links inside a node's settings should open themselves in a separate window. Nodes opened from the node lists should open in the side panel below the node list.
