Title: Contrail Maker
Post by: Ogre on May 20, 2008, 11:11:09 AM
Just uploaded a clip at Ashundar for masking a cloud to create a contrail effect.

Would this work as an airplane condensation trail if I changed the colour of it to a greyish white? Still waiting for it to appear on ashundar otherwise I'd have just tried it myself.

It's up at Ashundar.

The cloud color was just changed to black in the example photo you can change it to what you want.

Where did you get the Flash Gordon rocket?    ;) :D

I'll have a look at the cloud effect later.

Thought I'd post this here if you missed it on the Ashundar thread.
This was a lot of fun to play with. Only problem is that it's a bear on resources.
This was rendered at 1, 10, 1 I think and this 640x480 is as high as I can go.
I tried to do a crop render at 1024x but I got smart and jumped up the samples for the cloud, and that kill it..
I'm thinking on another computer or a bank of PS3's. ;)
Thanks ogre!!

Wow, Mandrake.  Impressive.

Is this possible with the TGD you provided or did you discover anything else it would help to know?

Thanks,
Made the clouds whitish
I put the light source behind the engines also added an Adjust saturation colour and power fractal between the atm and the merge shader. Don't know how much diff. that actually made.

As long as I'm posting tonight, thought I'd let you know that the heavy node builds that our only come out at night friend ogre con-cocks not to mention Mr. Lamposts builds, are much more friendly with the latest build!!
I could barely get this out at 640X before!

Much faster with the new version!

Mandrake - I posted the dusty trail version over at ashundar

Ogre, do you have the actual files for this newest version on Ashundar?

Never mind...I wasn't logged in.   ::)

The contrails look really good but I am having a very difficult time believing this was all rendered in TG.  Painted in Photoshop maybe?

No, the only thing I did in PS was convert it from an exr.

Oh, I wonder if this could be used for a dust storm?

Thought Ogre would be by but I don't see why not, I'm not much with these big nodes but play with the settings.

Sorry, long weekend.  A dust storm would occur over a large area so it would depend on what you needed.  This particular mask may not be good for that but a modified one might.  This mask would probably be good for snow blowing off a mountain or the like, a smaller local effect.

Here is a quick WIP of snow blowing off a mtn top with the input parameters.

Now, that's really cool. Those same settings look like they would be good for a steam train chuffing by too.

Wow, nice adaptation there, Ogre.

Thanks,  I am doing a "final" modification on the functions and will release a V2. The inputs will include;
Initial X
Initial Y
Initial Z
Final X
Final Y
Final Z
Initial Radius X
Initial Radius Y
Final Radius X
Final Radius Y

The change between initial and Final positions will be done linearly. I will also make a version so it is planar in XY, XZ and YZ so Mandrake doesn't get confused. ;)

wow nice pic ogre, and that would make an awesome steam train engine trail.

Just uploaded the current version to the Ashundar DL section. I included a few brief explanations of the functions used.

So, If I used 3 of these node systems, one for each of the Thunderbird 3, engines, would I use 2 merge shaders or plug them all into the density shader?
Did this all over lunch? hehe

Lunch - About the only time I have now days to play!

To generate multiple trails - Yes plug into a merge shader like in the original flash rocket contrail clip.  I'll look into simpler ways to make multiple trails but for now that is the answer.

I attached the base clip file here. Use that until the file zip is uploaded at ashundar.

Here is another adaption I have been working on.

If you are interested here is the latest version of that setup.  I believe this one sets the plume in the Y direction.

I made it a little easier to set up by putting all the internal functions in the internal nodes and only inputs in the external.

Thanks.  Been super busy at work.  I am responsible for IT at 3 resorts and the parent company put me in charge of PCI efforts for the entire corporation so not much TG2 time for me anymore but I dabble when I can.  Haven't seen much of you either......
