I'm gonna get a new processor and some ram in the beginning of July. At the moment I run an Core 2 Duo 6600 rated at 2.4 ghz and OC'd to 3.4GHZ stable. Has anyone had any experience of overclocking a quad core processor? Will I be able to get the same kind of performance increase (percentage wise)? And finally is the Q6700 the best bang for buck processor at the moment?

Make sure you back everything up including all drivers. I had exactly the same once and I'm fairly convinced overclocking turned it into an expensive internet machine after a few months. Others will tell you very opposite stories, but take out insurance against everything going wrong and do the backups just in case.

The Q6700 codename Kentsfeild is six generations behind the Q9000 and QX9000 series codename Yorkfeild.

I have an overclocked Q6600 (currently at 3.0GHz).
Both the Q6600 (G0 stepping) and the Q6700 should overclock to around 3.6GHz on a good air cooler with suitable motherboard and RAM .
The main advantage of the Q6700 is that it has a higher multiplier (10) than the Q6600 (9) which makes it easier to overclock without stressing other components.
Also being a higher rated chip the Q6700 should require less additional voltage to overclock to any given level.
I have a Q6700 at 3,2 with stock cooler.
All I get is max. 5°C degrees higher Temp and a little higher fanspeed.
I had to do a little volt enhancement by 0,02 tho.
Thanks for the replies guys. I would love of course to go for the Extreme flavours but as they come in at the £500 mark I think I'll have to stick with the Q6700. I'll keep you posted.
