Title: Object problem again
Post by: j meyer on September 03, 2008, 04:16:44 PM
Hi,
came across another problem.I had downloaded an architectural example
to compare the modeling with my own stuff and thought let's see how this
kind of geometry gets rendered in TG.It gave me 40 or so errors and i had to
close TG.Tracked it down to a 2 piece part,the capital of a column,and separated
that part and rendered the single components both causing the errors.I tried to
change the geometry to no success, tried to render in TP2 -> crash.
Then i built a similar, slightly simplified piece and tried it again with the same
results:up to 51 errors in TP5 and a crash in TP2.
Attached is a screenshot of the error message and the obj files and tgds.
cap and capi2 are from the downloaded model and caprepli is the simplified
replica.

Opened each of your objects in Terragen and repeated your problem, loads of TraceRay and trBucketRender errors (interestingly a different number of errors each time ...).

Loaded your obj's into Lightwave, no problems, couldn't see any obvious modeling issues saved them out, loaded them into PoseRay and resaved them, loaded into Terragen and render is ok.

Then I tried just opening them in PoseRay and re-saving them out and render is ok.

So don't know what caused your problem but PoseRay  (http://mysite.verizon.net/sfg0000/)is your solution.

Hope this helps

Richard

Thanks Richard, the info about PoseRay led me to the solution:
the infamous ngons. The other day i simply didn't notice the wee
little ngons at the tips of the leaflike pieces, actually i had to scale
it up some hundred percent before they got visible in wings. These had
some unconnectable vertices also,so they had to be collapsed, the
other ngons could be converted and that did it.
So,beware of ngons!
Seems PRay has some kind of automatic ngon conversion.Interesting!
Thanks again,J.
