Title: Terragen 2
Post by: sjefen on November 29, 2008, 06:12:54 PM
This image really looks like a Terragen 2 render with the alpine shader.
Maybe it is, but cause of the clouds and the details in the snow I don't think so. What do you think?

The surfacing has some areas of detail blur, which TG2 doesn't usually have, so it may not be TG2.  It looks more like a Vue render, though the date says 2006.  I think they had the volumetric clouds back then.

Id be surprised if it was cg, though i think its mainly the distribution of the snow that gives it away.

It looks very much like an old render from Oshyan, or one of the preview images in the Planetside homepage, before TG2 came out to the public, but they were already working on it.

I'm pretty sure this is a photo - open it in photoshop and look at the shadow detail. The rock structure are not anything I've seen in CG. I've spent 50 odd years walking and climbing and have seen and photographed this sort of scene many times,

Hmmm, increasing the exposure does reveal a lot of detail in the darker areas...

Still, some of these scenes do come close:

http://www.planetside.co.uk/gallery/f/tg2/nicolas_hoffmann_gi_mount2.jpg.html (the foreground snow is very realistic in this one...)

It could be done in TG2, but it seems the image in this case is a real Photograph...

...and I already wanted to compliment on the excellent clouds! ;D In case it's a photograph it would be odd to say that the foreground looks a bit artificial ;)

The sun doesn't look real. I'd say this is Vue but I suppose it could be an early TG2. hm. not sure.

I know what you mean, something doesn't fit in this picture... has somebody thought about the possibility that this is partly cg and partly a real photograph? I've seen such work before on this forum and it looked amazing!  :D

You can tell it's a photograph.

Look on the left side on the edge of the mountain, you can see places where the wind has swept up some of the snow, creating a kind of swirl on the silhouette of the mountain. That would only be in a photograph or a photoshopped render.
The sun looks realistic enough to me. Just because the disk diameter is small and its coming through lots of cloud cover doesn't mean it's CGI.

Looks like it could almost be CGI, but we have a ways to go until we can create truly photo-realistic images such as this. Terragen images always appear very clean; there's normally not much grain (although this can be added in post), while photographs usually have some amount of grain, especially in low light conditions like this image. Computer generated images are always too clean, too perfect looking.

Well, I found the image in this link: http://www.wallcoo.com/nature/snow_mountain/html/wallpaper30.html (http://www.wallcoo.com/nature/snow_mountain/html/wallpaper30.html)

I believe It's a photograph...
But I can't read Japanese (if it is Japanese) to be sure.

Ah, I had been looking there... You can choose the English version on the homepage, going to try something.

Not to sound negative, but this seems to take forever to load on my system which is strange considering its in .jpg format, is any one else having the same problem: and my modem is quite fast.

Regards to you.

That's a photo. But definitely a worthwhile TG2 challenge! Very possible to reproduce I think...

Alright. A challenge it is. I will try to make something similar ;)
