That looks like a quick and effective way to add birds but I'm thinking you could take photos and post edit them yourself.

Does anybody know where to get good bird models or will I have to model them - something I intend to do but it's all time consuming. Actually, I'm after bats for my latest planet or bat like creatures.

I think that there are a couple of bird models in the www.terragen.org download section.

I'm working in Gimp at the moment. You can make image pens (as you can with most major 2D image editors) so you could post draw flocks of birds in seconds. All various sizes, opacity etc (pressure sensitive pen).
