I've been taking a break from rendering for a while, but wanted to share some of the progress I've made with image based displacements. I do plan on developing this further. I think the results are very nice if done correctly, and can supplement areas where more of an organic/natural look is required. Additionally, this method should animate nicely.
That's very good!
That looks really convincing Moodflow, the blending works incredibly well.
I am sold. Please let us know what your doing! :-X
Wow! Yes, please tell us :)
Those rocks are astounding :o... I'm very curious as to how you did this, they have to be the most realistic rocks I've seen done to date. Great work.
Convincingly photo realistic ...we look forward to more on this subject Moodflow.
:o
And you haven't called or left a message in eons. ;D Glad you're back!!
Do we get a little hint or tutorial or anything later?
I've tried to get this look, but considering that i am a MASSIVE newbie with no knowledge of how to manipulate the node network, i always get funny lookin' results.
Please share what you did!
looks very good...some tips please!!
You've been told about posting photographs before.....
moodflow... he's teased us, then legged it. Come back, we need to know how you did this.... PLEASE. ;D
Wow!!
Very neat work!
Did I hear something echoing in the distance? tutorial? tutorial? tutorial? tutorial?
At this distance it looks real ! :o
Do you have some close-ups to share ?
I found one of moodflow's earlier image displacement links in the forum. This link should take you right to an example he made (with tgd files).

My search criteria was image displacements and I used moodflow in the last filtering input. This will bring up many threads he has posted on using image maps for displacement; hence he reply of "what" as he thought, "doesn't anyone read around here?"
I think Moodflow has come up with something new, so I'm interested in hearing his new findings.
Could be. I am curious what he is using for the displacement image also. ???
Hey guys, sorry for not responding. I keep getting caught up in life's web of responsibility!
For image based displacement, you have to carefully extract or create the displacement from the image. I used photoshop to do this, and it was very time consuming. The displacement usually does NOT really match the colors/shading on the image, so its very tricky to get just right, and even then, its still not 100% accurate. Additionally, you are limited by the pixel level of the image, so up close shots usually won't work well.
In this image, I got pretty lucky. I wish I had more time to do a full write up on this, but it would be pages and pages worth of stuff.
I am still curious as to the images, before photoshop and after. Using a photograph could be a quick way to get a really good landscape.

I think that using P.Shop is only to get a greyscale image from the original one and using it to create a image bump ...
......
I did one day found this example in planetside forum ; that use an image map shader as a texture for the landscape, I've made a little modification to see what it gives with fakestone ,ehh(that's my cloud) the result ?
See it :
This is helpful for someone with Photoshop - http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html
I did this one awhile back, using images - http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1600412&member
Oh I forget the Tgd file ... here's
