I am having a problem finding DEM files that are free on the Internet and I liked to know can someone help me find one.
DEM is being phased out. It is getting harder and harder to find them. There is a free version of World Machine which outputs Ter files. This may help.

The whole world available at 90m resolution, US available at higher resolutions (down to 3m).

I was there (at the site) and they have GIS data. I could not find DEM files. I'll have to look harder.
This sounds to me like more of a terminology issue. .dem extension files are and were always fairly uncommon. However DEM (digital elevation model) data is getting more common and more widely available all the time. It comes in an very wide variety of formats (.bil, .dtd, .tiff, .adf, .bt, .flt, .dte, .ntf, .srtm and on and on) and figuring out what program can open each one is half the battle.
For TG2 use the easiest format to use that takes no conversion effort is the GeoTiff format which can be downloaded directly from the link Oshyan provided.
Other data such as the Canadian elevation data comes in a text format and needs to be converted into a file type TG2 can use.
Except that this is the TG 0.9/Classic area. ;) In that case you may find 3DEM useful: http://www.terragen.org/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item490

Need to read the headers!
Another option which generates simple DEM files is VistaPro. It may be in someone's abandonware archive somewhere.
If you want elevation maps of other planets/moons, try Map-A-Planet. You can download NASA images for free and use Photoshop to convert to tga or use Wilbur to convert directly to ter.
If you are looking for DEM files froma Canadian source http://www.geobase.ca/geobase/en/index.html will cover most of the country in 50,000 and 250,000 scales, try to stick with the 50's the 250's are you grainy
