Can't find a reference to it.
It's outdated and unnecessary as far as I know. You can just save directly as EXR now.

I would like to render multiple EXR files from different cameras, for processing into cube maps.
Is the animation module the only way to automate that process? I was hoping I could set up six cameras and have each one render and save, using the node network, or something like that.
The animation option does work well for this, but I think it is also possible (note: I have not actually done this) to use the command line interface and a batch file to automate rendering multiple projects, so just save each cube face as a project and give that a try.

Yes, it is possible. I'm doing it.
http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=6931.0 - this is where I posted an example script. It doesn't do cubemaps, but it should be trivial to modify it so it does. I have one that does, but since I'm trying to make a few bucks selling skyboxes, I don't feel like sharing it, sorry.
