Title: Vue 8 SIGGRAPH videos by E-On
Post by: latego on September 08, 2009, 12:22:56 PM
I have just found the page http://www.e-onsoftware.com/about/event/NewsSiggraph2009.php (http://www.e-onsoftware.com/about/event/NewsSiggraph2009.php) on E-On site containing Vue 8 SIGGRAPH video presentations.

There is nothing really ground shaking (;D pun intended); I have noticed that a video showing character posing thru proprietary bones (which was briefly available on GeekAtPlay.com site) has disappeared.

Bye!!!

P.S.: there is a video with lots of shots from movies: E-On conveniently omits that usually Vue did create only plants and the rest of the job was done by Max/Maya/XSI etc. A most amusing factoid: they show the shots from a video game, Stormbirds, whose claim to fame is to have been cancelled a handful of days after being announced...

Yet... we do not have this quality animation demo reel with TG2. there are only the animation on the official website, and the render from Oshyan rendered on the render farm stuff... but that's all.
the clouds really are the weakness of Vue !

I think many of these animations are fantastic.
In particular, I did envy the vue/max workflow presentation for its ability to see objects in the preview and the speed by which the various preview windows update on changes.

It reminds me of the heyday of TG 0.9 ;D How can people think those white bubbles look like clouds?

Because I downloaded Vue Infinite they sent me an email about these. I have not looked yet. The images in the email were very good. Since I can't sleep, I will look at them later.

Thanks.  I'm glad you posted this link.  It looks useful.

I see that Vue 8 will do overhangs, that's nothing new to TG2, but it is painted on the terrain very quickly. The presentations by Vlad and his wife Ami are somewhat impressive.

Strangely enough, no one is speaking of these videos on the Vue boards!

I spotted the following novelties in Vue 8:
That's about it for the main features but I have spotted new elements in some menus here and there.

Yes, they are adding bones so you can animate Text, characters, and whatever else you want,..................... least that's what the rumour is. Almost silly to add bones without some sort of modeler IMO, but I can see that it would save time from having to do it in another app, export it, then import to Vue, the way it is now.

@Thelby - This sounds like maybe MDD imports might be the plan.  That would be amazing.  Thanks for the info.

I think planetside needs to get a team together and start getting some solid animation reels out of tg2 Most of that vue stuff was with aid of the big three xsi maya and max so I don't see a problem showing some animations with aid from these types of software too ;D

geez the workflow in that second video is pretty impressive though

The videos I looked at were not pure VUE, but composited parts from several programs. A couple were sort of 'Bee chases guy made from spheres', 1980's Pixar.
But as a whole they were not bad, I even recognized some movie clips. Lets see where the 3dMax plug in takes T2.

We need (well, I want) a Modo plug-in or a zBrush plug-in or a Messiah Studio plug-in.  Not sure how much could be done with these, but it doesn't hurt to say something.  Does it?

So this is Disney World. Can we live here? ::)
It would be great if Terragen 2 could be incorporated into many 3D model/render programs. 8)

@njeneb -  ;D

I agree - TG2 could be the Union Station for many ideas.

I don't think so. I think Vue 7 Pioneer is what I downloaded for free some time ago.
It puts a big honking 7 logo on your final output. File sizes are limited etc ....

I was able to get Vue Infinite. It's very nice until you want to render something. Then it crashes. I think it could be a great program, but it's way too expensive. Upgrades cost more money. It also seems that upgrades are actually patches to fix problems. I am considering abandoning the program.
Besides, things in Terragen 2 make sense to me; even when I have no true idea what the thing I am using actually does. It does do the thing I want. ;D

Vue is extremely user friendly; the only obstacles between it and being a wonderful program are:
1) E-On attitude towards customers (they look at us just a the proverbial Barnum suckers to be milked as much as possible);
2) E-On lack of quality control (actaully about half of the fixes do add bugs, not fix them);
3) the behaviour of a small but really dangerous group of fanboys (I have nicknamed them the Vue Klux Klan ;D) which roam every forum even remotely connected with Vue and implacably harrass and silence any kind of criticism towards Vue and E-On.

Being these obstacles human-related and not technology related, there is no solution (at least none that does not send you into a prison or a psychiatric hospital..). As an example, I was so fed up with these problems that I actually stopped working with Vue and have switched to Carrara.

As a last note, I really like the general attitude of this forum: people do complain, but things are resolved in most cases in a totally civilized way.

Bye!!!

P.S.: in this http://www.cornucopia3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10106 (http://www.cornucopia3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10106) thread you will find some renders with Vue8: people salivate on them... I don't find them so different from what 7 could do though godrays are now easier to create... a valid reason to upgrade?

The last image in the group is probably the best. Using Vue is kind of like Dazz or Bryce. The objects provide more content than the terrain. At least with Terragen 2, the user has the power tools to really make a stunning landscape before the objects are included.

Mmmh it all depends what works for you with terragen 2 I am just in my element im a very logical person so i thinks thats why but terragen can do a lot of things it wasent designed for with alot of improvision and once you know the tools you can create almost anything.
I was talking to dax (nukeation) and he said vue just works for him and his vue work is pretty damn amazing he is sort of the luc bianco of vue, so at the end of the day it all depends what works for you and in my case it is terragen all the way i just love this program haha!
