Title: TG2 & Remote Desktop
Post by: tempaccount on September 19, 2009, 06:35:53 AM
I'm having some weird problems using TG2 over Remote Desktop connection in XP.

First of, if I start TG2 in a remote session, the preview window has parts of it that don't render, or alternatively black splotches. I've tried closing the preview and opening it again inside the program to no avail.

Second, if I start TG2 locally, and log to the same session remotely, TG2 seems unable to render it's own window and I have to close it down (End Program).

I'm using the default Remote Desktop software that comes with XP. Both machines have XP SP3.

I think I would do all my work first on a 'live' desktop. Then use the remote just for rendering. But you say this causes a hang up. I am not sure how to help with this. Do you have problems using other software over the remote connection?

Frankly I just put together the pc, so I've only used TG2 on it. It seems to work fine locally. Rendering works fine, in fact, everything else works except the TG2 preview window.

Of course I can do the work locally, save it, and then render it later remotely. It would just be a huge convenience to be able to have full functionality remotely.

edit: I should probably try an updated graphics card driver on it.

The black splotches are commonly a display driver problem of the remote desktop ... it is the sky, isn't it?

Sky, yes. And in my current scene, the water body as well.

Well, I am not aquainted with water in TG2 .. at least not on remote.
A bigger hazard is swapping from one group to another .. like from shaders to render ... it takes ages until the node network has zoomed to the specific area ;)

Definitely use the latest graphics driver available for your hardware. This is important even without remote desktop, but it becomes all the more so when you use RD because it seems to do odd things with the graphics commands in order to facilitate desktop sharing. If all else fails try an alternative remote desktop solution like VNC. I use UltraVNC myself (free and full featured).
