Title: Saved projects
Post by: wittgenstein on October 11, 2009, 03:18:30 PM
Hi, I'm new here and have a question.
When I open my saved projects I always have to regenerate and re-erode my heightfields. Are there no way around this, so that the generated and eroded terrains are saved? Especially the erode-process is quite time consuming.

You can export the heightfield after it's been computed. Then use the heigtfield load operator to bring back the saved heightfield and save the project again with a slightly different name. At least that's what I would try. My computer is rendering and is mostly tied up doing that, so I can't test this to be sure.

Once your heightfield is created and the erosion has run, right-click the heightfield node in the node network and choose Save As. Save as a TER format, then use a Heightfield Load in place of all your other heightfield operators for subsequent uses of the scene. Note that by doing this you will not be able to adjust settings for the heightfield operators anymore, so be sure you finalize your terrain before taking this step. You can of course keep the old heightfield nodes around but disconnected and inoperative, in case you later want to change settings, at which point you would regenerate, then Save As again, and change the TER that is loaded by the Heightfield Load.

Thanks Oshyan. I have not done this before, so I left out things. I just recalculate. It does not take that long even on some of the huge heightfields I make.

Thank you all for your input. I just came home from work and will try Oshyans suggestion later tonight. I'm sure it will work and will be a big time saver since the erode-process can take maybe 30min on the heightfileds I am currently working on (1000x1000)

Wonderful. We all would like to see your work. It's one of the nice things at the forum; getting to see others projects.
