Title: After school
Post by: Viktim on December 28, 2009, 11:27:22 AM
hi.

My name is Granit, i live in sweden and im 18 years old. I'm on my last year in "high school" and i dont know what to do after. Me and some friends had in mind to start a production company(im very interested in film making). But my father want me to start on university, i cant really blame him because its completely free here in sweden. He says that money is not an issue and i can start on a "film school" outside sweden if i want to.

Starting a company and produce film/commercials/music videos sounds sooooo much more tempting.

what would be the best choice? please help me.

School. You will be able to use production equipment without buying it or renting. Plus, you will get to see how the pro's do things and how the University's Professor does things. It may be frustrating, but so are budgets. Many great projects turned out just ok because of money issues.

You will also learn how to work with creative people. Creative people are not easy to convince that your way is right.

Also, college is a great way to meet people who are connected. This can be great for getting funding for a special project you may have.

University, hands down. Most film schools are heavily project-based, which allows you to gain experience doing real-world projects while under guidance of experienced professionals. There is a lot more to good film and media production than most people think at first, and I know that I have benefitted immensely from my experiences in a university program. It might seem a little irritating to put your professional dreams on hold for a few years, but you will have much more success when you actually begin working.

Something that is less available in my very small program but is certainly present in larger schools is an extensive network in the industry, allowing you to easily slip into internships and jobs, or alternatively get quick access to new clients and technologies during and after your schooling.

the problem is that there are no good "film schools" in sweden, the good ones are far away like america and Australia. Moving to a whole new continent feels like a very huge thing. But, im also very interested in CG and we actually have a 3dsmax course in school right now. You guys know if there is any good "CG" school in europe?

I really dont know what to do:P hehe. I think me and my friends are a good team because we are good at different things. We are actually doing a movie right now.

Here a link to the Intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYifpN9gj3k

(There are many bad things in this intro that we will change, like the voiceover and some transitions between songs)

If you've got the English for it (and it looks like you do), I would really recommend going to an American film school. While there are great film schools around the world, the fact that we have a stupendously huge industry in the states creates a greater concentration of them here. If you're more interested in CG or animation you can check out places like Brigham Young University, NYU-Tisch School of the Arts, Savannah College of Art and Design, Ringling College, and many more.

The intro you posted looks pretty good; you've clearly already spent some time and created some skills in this field. Going to university will help you hone them.

i got a friend down in savannah whos loving it down there.  if you are into film and such good to go where you can learn what you want (if money isnt a concern like you said).

but definately keep school up

In France we have the ESMA, "Ecole Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques"
Here are some of their creations:

Guys i am following some forums for many years.
What i have read most of the time from many artists is that what matters in the end is what kind of demo  and reputation you have.
Not in what school you were. So from a educational view it is good to go to a school . But this is definitively not enough .
Make your film ( 3d or traditional  or what ever you do) as you are there. It will help you.
But if your demo sucks nobody will employ you whatever school you may  have graduated from. So to speaks.

Go to school and make a good demo. I think that is the best way. But it is up to you  :)

Cheers.

Hi guys

I have checked out some of the schools you posted and they look very interesting. One of my friends is also very interested in film making, so if both of us began at a film school together i think it would be awesome.

Hi kadri and thank you:)

Me and my friend have the past three years been talking about making a movie together and after nagging on the school about buying new equipment we have finally started. And as you said, if the movie turns out good we will use it as a reference.
