$200 for the pack!

Some people must pay that I guess. I keep hoping they will release individual objects for purchase or very small packs at more affordable prices.

With individuals producing such high quality objects here and the growing NWDA library of objects selling at reasonable prices, not to mention all the Ashundar stuff, there seems little appeal in paying hundreds of dollars to Xrog.

Once the quantity of NWDA models reach a viable level (the quality is already there) might they be released in OBJ format as well? That would make a huge dent in XFrog's market.

you know who modelled those veggis?

200/180 makes 1,11 US$ per model - I think thats not really expensive.

I thought I recognised the style :)
The price is very good I agree but I do think people have a good point in selling the models at an individual price.

Xfrog does sell its models individually on Turbosquid for example. Also on Cornucopia. Of course it can take a while until the new stuff is uploaded, don´t have a clue when this happens. But it will happen.

I totally understand hobby users, that can´t buy a complete library for 200 bucks. But I guess that this is more targeted to archviz business.

Hi Richard,

all the object packs at NWDA come as TGO's and OBJ in one package. You may have overlooked that ;)

Cheers,
Frank

yes, thats right, but this is simply the price scheme of turbosquid.

Walli the price per model is good in the Xfrog pack but that's to be expected because of the amount of objects you are bulk buying, that's normal business practice. If they released a pack with say just 5 or 10 objects then I would expect the price per object to go up quite a bit higher, which is fair enough.

This is what I hoped xfrog would do, release smaller packs of individual objects with a higher cost per object but a total overall cost of much less for instance around $10 instead of $200.

As you mention in one of your posts, it seems they are targeting business use with that sort of charge but I don't see why they can't release smaller more cost effective packs aiming at the hobbyist market.

Walli i'm just grateful that i'm able to use your objects via NWDA because you really are an outstanding modeller.

I totally understand that, but compared to other commercial vendors, Xfrog price is not bad at all. By the way - on turbosquid you always buy a species, this means 3 models in each pack (should be nine in the latest ones, but I am not sure baout that), so the per model price on Turbosquid also is below 10,-.

I also think it would be nice if it would be possible for customers to create own, small bundles - but I think the only way to get something like that is to ask them directly.

Thankyou, I had indeed :)
Are you advertising outside the Terragen community then?

I haven't tried to advertise this elsewhere, personally I have no track record in any other CG community than Terragen's.
I had mentioned it in a rero vue forum once, but a couple funky guys (actually just one) there actually were put off by the fact that we differntiate between private and commercial use pricing...

oh well...

Frank

Crazzy, its one of your better marketing choices (um... that sounded patronoising, not meant too;) ) other than the generaly high quality :) (that also sounded  nah you know what I mean, sometimes the keyboard defeats me ::))

with Xfrog 4, just ask me ;-)
What do you want to know?
It´s the first time that I used Xfrog 4 for an official library, so this is also the first library that doesn´t ship with xfr files.
Title: Re: New XFrog Library ~ Home Garden PLants
Post by: FrankB on February 21, 2010, 05:22:19 AM
what's xfrog 4 anyway? Seems it cannot be obtained stand-alone. What's new in xfrog 4 compared to 3.5?
Why are xfrog not updating the stand-alone xfrog 3.5?
I mean, not to speak of that it's GUI looks like Unix in the early 90's and that it cannot be installed on modern OS's without booting into safe mode first...
I really don't understand it.

because people asked all the time how nice it would be to have Xfrog inside packags like Maya ad CInema and that is what happened with Xfrog 4. They also have been asking for Linux and when it came noone wanted to buy, because Linux is free...

Xfrog 4 and Xfrog 5 are plugins at this stage and me to hopes that somewehen a standalone will be avaivable. What I like about the standalone is speed and the dedicated interface. Its there to make plants which makes it very fast to use.

The main advantages of Xfrog 4 compared to good old standalone: variation object, better tropism object (and you can use several tropisms), pruning, better handling of mesh/UV

I guess it is sort of like Blender. It launches in Windows from a cmd window. They do this to make it easy to port from one system to another.

yeah, but hey,... can't even bring the installer up to par? Come on.
Also, the question is what's so difficult to add the new features to the standalone?
A major GUI overhaul, while howlingly overdue, may take a little longer, i understand that.

Cheers,
Frank

Xfrog 4 is a complete rewrite and is simply not compatible to Xfrog 3.5. A lot of stuff simply was not possible to add on top anymore, therefor the decision was done to do a complete fresh restart, so that new features really can be implemented. Please don´t forget that Xfrog 3.5 is based on develpment that has been done on SGI computers. The core was old and limiting. So Xfrog 4 is not Xfrog 3.5 plus some features - Xfrog 4 is something new.
The only drawback of Xfrog 4 - and here I fully understand all non Cinema and non Maya users - there is no standalone.

ah....xfrog 4.x

hmmmm.....
as a Houdini user I have to say "BAH!"...but as a Houdini user I also understand.... :)

I guess I'll just have to build my own system in Houdini to make these kinds of things...

thanks.

sorry, I don´t get this one, could you explain please? Houdini is great, I have dabbled with the apprentice version two years ago. If I would have to buy an additional package to the one I already use (Cinema4D), then this would be Houdini.

I think goldfarb is saying he'd like to see XFrog 4.xx for Houdini :)
Richard
(sorry if I'm wrong tho)

well, I think at least some of the functionality could be rebuild with Houdini. Houdini is extremly flexible and it is very "compatible" to Xfrog (procedural approach)

yeah...I'd like to see an xfrog plugin for Houdini...
but Houdini can replicate much of the work flow
Houdini has a pretty strong l-system generator that can have inputs for leaves etc...and you can prune with metaball volumes etc...
