Title: Snow maps for the Free Grand Fir tree
Post by: bobbystahr on December 01, 2017, 03:11:43 PM
Or in fact any tree that uses the same maps/ Just merge or replace  these with the existing maps till you get what you need.

Thanks Bobby!

You're welcome. I added a render with the snow default shader at ADD and .75

A free tree!  Did you model this Bobby?  Looks great!  I love fir trees, especially the Subalpine Fir, the Noble Fir, and the Blue Cone Korean Fir.  ;)

Thanks Bobby!

What you can also do is paint in some more snow in the alpha, and add a small scale subtle bumpmap.

Cool!  I'll be sure to use these techniques when I get to trees & populations.  I have always struggled with snowy looking trees, so these tips are great!

Check out this amazing snowy scene:  http://www.nwdastore.com/wp-content/gallery/gallery/10269263_1498557417031331_3346961511361719887_o.jpg (http://www.nwdastore.com/wp-content/gallery/gallery/10269263_1498557417031331_3346961511361719887_o.jpg)

That's a really nice work indeed. If you can work in external modeling software, you can take a tree and model some blobs of snow on the larger branches, as an extra object, or integrated with the tree object. When populating, the blobs go with it of course if integrated, else distribute with exactly the same parameters (seed!). I tried that and it works well. Then of course use a 'whitener/snow shadermix' for snow on the actual branches and needles too.
Unfortunately you can't  populate random blobs of snow sitting randomly on a pop of trees (yet).
