Title: Free grass!
Post by: Costaud on February 11, 2007, 03:15:47 PM
I just found a nice (and free) little program to make obj grass the program is no longer available but I also found a link (after hard time with Google the program is hard to find) here is the link http://threekingdoms.com/bantam3d/Bantam3DGrass7.zip

And here a quick test (with a simple color shaders)(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f337/costaud/Bantamgrass.jpg)

Thanks for sharing! Let's see how it works out for me :)

Thanks!  It'll be nice to have some variation to TG2's grass clumps.

What did you do about the serial number?

Nevermind, found it :P

Hmm, when I load the object, it crashes TG2 immediately.

For the import of the grass in Terragen 2 first open it in Wings 3D (or Blender) and resave it as an obj again I don't know why but some program don't save correctly obj file.  For the serial just read the Readme that come with the program.

Nice guys, however, not all of us have the ability or knowledge to convert these files into the proper format for usage. Would some of you mind sharing them in the shared files portion of the forum????

By the way Coustad, NICE.

All you have to do is open the file in Wings or another free 3D software program like Blender, and resave it from there.  A repost would still be handy, though.

Blender is not needed...

Open the obj in Terragen. Rightclick the node and select 'save object file', save it (as tgo), delete node, load the tgo object and render away!

i've noticed when saving obj to tgo in terragen it deletes texture mapping:(. and when you load the tgo it renders the object as black...

Actually, I can't even get that far.  TG2 crashes for me while its adding the object.

are you clicking yes or no when prompted if the object is compatible with xfrogs?... should click no

Yes that may work with ordinary obj file but Terragen crashed if you attempt to open grass saved as a obj file with Bantam, Blender is not really an easy program but Wings 3D yes, just open the grass made with Bantam in Wings 3D and resave it again as a obj file it's easy. But you may have to tweak the surfaces a little.

Has anyone heard of PlantStudio?

I have used it for a few projects.

It is free, it has a small library of plants which you can edit or use a randomizer to change. You can make your own from scratch, it is easy to use and has built in tutorials.

I also use XFrog and this is no Xfrog but sometimes the simple tool is the best tool.

You can export 3ds, lwo, obj, dxf, pov inc and vrml.

I have only used the lwo export option, it worked well.

PC only. Try it you will probably like it.

Download it here http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/ (http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/)

Yes Pant studio is very cool and very easy to use too, here is another little free program I just found but I don't try it yet. http://members.chello.nl/~l.vandenheuvel2/TReal/#programdesc

Forget about the above program TReal because is only export POV files at the moment but concerning Plant Studio here an image with a plant from it. For the bark I've used a rock texture image map.

It may be the vodka or it may be me, but I only have one file in my ...\Bantam3D\Grass directory: "ST6UNST.LOG"

Where is this README file of mystery?
Title: Re: Free grass!
Post by: Costaud on February 18, 2007, 01:19:07 AM
It's not the vodka, all the other files are with the installer (the place where you have unzipped the program) including the Readme and the very important Serial number file.

Alright, I'm sober now and I'm getting the same problem MeltingIce was getting... the thing gives me about fifty sequential error messages and then, when it tries to add the object, Terragen goes kaput.

I'll have a drink tomorrow and see if that does anything.

There's no TGD file to post.  I can't get Terragen to import the object...  I save the twig in Bantam as a .obj, and when I try to import the thing to Terragen, I get loads of error messages and it drops me to the desktop.

Ok I see part of the problem that were having. The multishader in terragen is not large enough to handle the obj. On the forth try I got TG2 to recognize the obj after running it through blender. I could then save as a tgo and create this test.
Seem like a very fast way to make some neat grass. Any of you modelers out there know how to tweak the shader in blender or TG2 to lower the #within the multishader.  ??? So adding the obj to TG2 will go smooth.

The multi-shader can handle up to 16 materials. I don't know why grass would have more than 16 materials; it should be quite simple (1 texture is would I'd expect). So are you *sure* it's a multi-shader issue?

Yes I do. so if you drop the obj into the forum - I will convert it and show you how to do it

Nor do I, but I have a grass obj with if my memory serves me correctly,  33 mats' the tgd is currently standing at 28Mb.

Whoops I forgot to explain it is for a 'group' of grass, hense the number of mats'.  17 of which of course I cannot yet use.

Not a lot really, waiting for this render to finish been going on 20hrs, you've guessed it, mainly grass.  :D
But I've bungled the foreground, I should have done a crop but thought I knew better. WRONG. Trouble is now 02:11 and another hour to go before it finishes then locks up the beast.  Still at least I can rescue the .bmp from the temporary file listing, later today.  Then I guess repopulate and do a cropped render and then a merge.  Ho hum!  Oh, think I'll pass on your kind offer vv grass tgo's.  ;D

Here are a couple of renders that I have done just recently using a grass model I created in XFrog 3.5.

http://www.terranuts.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=25546&limit=recent
http://www.terranuts.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=25538&cat=recent&limit=recent

It is a fairly lage model, the .tgo file is about 10Meg unzipped but it yields fairly good results. One of the things I don't like about the grass clump that comes with TG2 is that it is flat on the bottom, making it hard to get it to fit onto a surface that has been manipulated or tweaked (at least I haven't found a way). The model I created drops down on the edges below the origin point so that the grass always keeps contact with the surface.

Because it is a 3.5Meg zip file here is the link to the file on the Terranuts website

http://www.terranuts.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=505

May your fields of grass be lush and green. :)
