Wondering if anyone had ever attempted such a terrain?

Perhaps starting with the Alpine Fractal shader and applying a displacement multiplier to just the tops of the peaks?

I was pondering something similar but then, almost blindly I have this at the moment. Just took a few minutes here.

Moth and the Moon.  I own that poster.  Small world.  As it so happens, I will be attempting something similar for my own project.

I have that poster as well. Very small world.

The peaks inspired me to make something I had wanted to do for long time now. I am closer now with this.

I dont understand these mountains though. Is there anything like this in nature at that scale? Just curious, I understand the fantasy part of it.

Some of the peaks in Patagonia and Guilin Mountains in China might qualify.

Yes, it is sort of similar. Those steep peaks are also quite known in Northern Italy as The Dolomites.

My own efforts to make a render for a book cover were ok. If only I knew then what I know now. ;)
