I placed this image up on Renderosity yesterday.  I did not get much feedback, but I would like some as to what I can fix to make it better, and such.  The original image was rendered at 1600x1200 with 1 quality and 10AA, so I had to drop the size and quality quite a bit for it to be uploaded here and at rendo.

BTW, this is a GControl terrain

I feel that a bit more variation in the textures would help a lot.  If you had different textures for the vertical rock and the horizontal rock, that would be a good start.

agree with OB...and also the foreground looks very rough and there are holes (lots of them) in the terrain...they may be caused by heavy displacements, which seems to be the case in your foreground....try cranking down the displacement a bit...

so far it is looking good...add some bushes and trees...

I really like the roughness of the textures and the colors.  I find it a challenge sometimes to get the right mix and I think you have done a fine job.  Nevertheless, o_b and dh are being helpful.  That's a mark of someone looking out for you and I might not have seen these things.  Still learning...

The most important things have been said I think. A little bit more variation on the surfaces would be nice and also a little less rough. Though I wouldn't make them too smooth, so be careful with that. It's a pity that it's difficult to creat real outcrops/overhanging stratas instead of staircasing strata's. Maybe someone here knows how?
The terrain itself is very nice and the image looks good in overall. I hope you'll update this one and post it here. I'll be glad to see it.

I didn't like strata and outcrops shader to begin with but now I see that it's actually very good.

Your render is cool and a good use of the shader. Are the larger steps created with the shader or from the Geocontrol terrain? I'm assuming it's done with the strata and outcrops. I agree with the points about roughness and surfacing but your basic choice of colours is good. One problem with the strata and outcrops is the regularity. I tried tweaking the smoothing setting in compute terrain and found that it messed this regularity up a bit which was nice. I have some other strata graph stuff in the pipeline but not really utilized yet to show it's full potential.

This was my first realistic type test:

Then in more pure form:

This planet shows it used for both colour and slight displacement but it's use is subtle:

I wish I had some more time to make a proper planet to demonstrate this technique better but my next planet is going to be complex and will take some time. It is a much more versatile technique than these shots show. It's been discussed on the Planet Pig thread and there is a file on there.

You can probably twist the strata and outcrops up by sending it through a warp shader but I never tried that. Maybe someone else can experiment with it. I suspect it's already been done somewhere.

He he. My mind's boggling now with this warp shader. I think I can take my strata ideas to new heights with that.

I agree with the comments about colour variation and foreground roughness but the basic forms and strata are really nice well done.   ;)
Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfast.
